While it is not quite 'Cocomania' of 2019 vintage, there is still a passionate vocal backing for the American teenager.

One man implores her to keep fighting at deuce, then shouts 'Thank you!' when Gauff obliges with the ace.

This is a very uphill battle for Gauff if Kerber continues to play well.

It is really making Gauff feel uncomfortable.

Kerber gets down to scoop a forehand back at Gauff from beneath her feet, and the crowd try to raise Gauff's spirits as Kerber battles back again for 30-30.

    "Let's go Coco!"

Strong American presence in the crowd on Centre Court.

Can't see too many Stars and Stripes around though.

With Independence Day celebrated yesterday - on Wimbledon's traditional Middle Sunday pause - it seems to have denied us the chance to see some patriotic Americans around the grounds.

  7. Kerber holdspublished at 16:47 British Summer Time 5 July 2021

    *Gauff 4-6 1-3 Kerber

Angelique Kerber sticks to the task with a volley for 30-30, and Gauff is audibly frustrated as she misses on the following point.

Kerber holds, and the 2018 champion is edging closer to the quarter-final.

    Gauff 4-6 1-2 Kerber*

Smiles around Court One greet another excellent point, as Coco Gauff places a drop shot that, try as she might, Kerber is never getting to.

A really good response from the young American.

  9. Pressure telling on Gauffpublished at 16:43 British Summer Time 5 July 2021

    Gauff 4-6 1-2 Kerber *

Pressure telling. Reaction in the crowd tells you who the favourite is for them... but Kerber is the favourite in this match.

  10. Kerber breakspublished at 16:43 British Summer Time 5 July 2021

    Gauff 4-6 1-2 Kerber*

'Oohs' and Aahs' from the crowd as Angelique Kerber and Coco Gauff meet in the middle to battle out a superb point, and it's Kerber who comes out on top for 30-30.

The German then sets up break point - and this time she makes it count!

This is a big task for Gauff now.

  11. Medvedev on toppublished at 16:40 British Summer Time 5 July 2021

    Medvedev 5-2 Hurkacz

On court two, second seed Daniil Medvedev has twice broken the serve of Poland's Hubert Hurkacz - in the third and seventh games - and now has a chance to serve out the first set.

An impressive start to the match by the Russian.

To nick that perhaps over-used phrase... this meeting between the teenage phenom and the former champion was always thought to be a "popcorn" match.

So far, it has been a worthy tag. The Centre Court fans, ready for a contest after the one-sided Djokovic win, are thoroughly enjoying themselves.

    *Gauff 4-6 1-1 Kerber

    Gauff 4-6 1-0 Kerber *

    Tracy Austin
Two-time Grand Slam champion on BBC TV

Kerber is deceptively quick and she has great anticipation that can make the court much smaller for the other player.

She relies on her wheels, just as Andy Murray does.

  15. Break point Gauffpublished at 16:37 British Summer Time 5 July 2021

    Gauff 4-6 1-0 Kerber*

And now it's Gauff's turn to ask some questions.

The American springs forward after a long baseline rally to set up break point.

  16. 'Battle of real-estate'published at 16:35 British Summer Time 5 July 2021

    Gaiff 4-6 1-0 Kerber *

    Tracy Austin
Two-time Grand Slam champion on BBC TV

Really good court positioning by Gauff and keeping Kerber on the move by hitting so early.

Real battle of real-estate to push the other back.

Vital for Gauff to stop Kerber's momentum.

  17. Gauff holdspublished at 16:34 British Summer Time 5 July 2021

What a game to get this second set started!

    *Gauff 4-6 0-0 Kerber

Kerber leaps to nail a forehand down the line and take Gauff to deuce, and the German gets lucky as a shot from the baseline then clips the cord and leaves Gauff with no hope of beating the bounce.

Break point, but Gauff rescues the situation with a superb point - sending her opponent on the run before Kerber nets.

  19. Postpublished at 16:31 British Summer Time 5 July 2021

    *Gauff 4-6 0-0 Kerber

A whipped forehand winner gets Coco Gauff on the board at 15-15, but a sweet hit from Angelique Kerber puts the American on the back foot.

Gauff keeps calm, and a winner off the backhand sets up game point.

  20. Postpublished at 16:29 British Summer Time 5 July 2021

    *Gauff 4-6 0-0 Kerber

Five games in a row on serve at the end of a first set that started with five breaks in a row.

An enthralling battle. Coco Gauff gets us back under way.
