    Federer 7-5 2-2 Sonego*

Federer sends a backhand swirling past Sonego to get to 40-0 and then dumps an easy drop shot into the net. Oops.

Sonego spears a frustrated forehand long, and that's a hold for Federer.

A one-handed backhand winner from Federer gets the same reaction as a whistling rocket down your local Bonfire Night display.

Awe, wonder, amazement. And the hope you get to see some more next year.

  3. Sonego holdspublished at 19:14 British Summer Time 5 July 2021

    *Federer 7-5 1-2 Sonego

Sonego outmuscles Federer in a battle of the forehands, but the Swiss passes him with a glorious backhand to move to 30-30.

Sonego strings together some more big forehands to hold.

    Federer 7-5 1-1 Sonego*

Sonego shakes his racquet in celebration at his box as he gets his first point on the Federer serve, courtesy of a missed volley from the Swiss.

Federer then charitably gifts him a point with a horrorshow of a forehand before he too holds to 30.

  5. Back under way on Court Onepublished at 19:07 British Summer Time 5 July 2021

    Auger-Aliassime 6-4 7-6 (8-6) 3-6 3-6 2-0 Zverev*

We're back under way on Court One, although it's taken a bit longer to get going again than on Centre Court as there were some damp patches and some ball kids tried to mop up those areas with towels.

Auger-Aliassime takes the two points he needs to finish off his service game, so we're at 2-0 in the fifth, with the Canadian having a break.

Nothing too demonstrative from Mr Federer to mark winning the opening set. The good old clenched fist.

Far from his best was the 39-year-old but, as we've seen sooooo many times in the past, he's a difficult frontrunner to peg back.

The eight-time champion has only lost four of the 96 matches here where he has won the first set.

    *Federer 7-5 0-1 Sonego

Federer casts a suspicious look at the baseline as he once again jabs a forehand into the net.

A great drop shot from Sonego rattles off a hold to 30 first up.

  8. 'Expect Federer to raise his game'published at 19:04 British Summer Time 5 July 2021

Former British number one on BBC TV

Sonego will be disappointed to lose that first set, but Federer will be mightily relieved to get it under his belt.

In the indoor conditions without any wind swirling around, you would expect him to raise his game.

    Federer 7-5 Sonego*

Sensible from Wimbledon, but you still feel for both of those players, who are in for a late finish.

Lorenzo Sonego will serve first to start the second set.

Wimbledon has confirmed there will NOT be a 20-minute break between the end of the Zverev/Auger-Aliassime match and the start of Emma Raducanu's fourth-round tie with Ajla Tomljanovic.

They want to get her on ASAP.

That's an absolute horror for Sonego. That was the worst possible return for Sonego after the rain break.

  12. Game and first set - Federerpublished at 19:01 British Summer Time 5 July 2021

    Federer 7-5 Sonego

Well, he took the scenic route, but that's the first set on the board for Roger Federer.

He won 73% of points behind his first serve, but 17 unforced errors to 14 winners will be a concern for the Swiss.

He also went just two from nine on break points.

Brilliant move to the net from Federer, eventually forcing the error out of a stumbling Sonego, and it's set point to Federer.

That's a better serve, down the T, and Federer is at the net to pop the winner away.

30-40. Still another chance for Sonego...

    *Federer 6-5 Sonego

That's more like it, Federer getting up and under a cross-court forehand to get himself on the board.

That's not a good forehand from Federer, though, and once again, Sonego has break-back points as Fed serves for the set...

Back-to-back errors on a short forehand from Federer, and he's 0-30 down.

Blimey! That was cruel. Even the biggest, most passionate Fed Heads inside Centre Court could not feel sympathy there for Sonego. There was a collective groan.
