    Federer 1-1 Hurkacz*

A very routine hold to love from Federer. Hurkacz leaves a couple of straight-forward opportunities, and Federer finishes then with winning forehands on both occasions.

  3. Khachanov saves three break pointspublished at 16:29 British Summer Time 7 July 2021

    *Khachanov 4-6 6-3 7-5 1-6 4-4 Shapovalov

Shapovalov piles on the pressure. The Canadian has break point to set up the chance to serve for the match...

Khachanov rises to the challenge, letting out a huge roar as he makes deuce, but Shapovalov uses power to beat Khachanov at the net and set up a second opportunity.

That one passes, as does a third as Shapovalov hits marginally long.

Nice game for Hurkacz to win against his childhood idol, on Centre Court.

He does pack a punch on the serve, and now Federer will step up to the line.

    *Federer 0-1 Hurkacz

A confidence-building hold for Hubert Hurkacz, the world number 18 but he's seeded 14th this year.

A backhand down the line forces Federer to go wide and that's a hold for the Pole.

    Federer 0-0 Hurkacz*

This is the biggest match of Hubert Hurkacz's career and he's understandably nervous as a forehand flies off the frame of the racquet and nearly into the stands. That was 15-30, and a later forehand into the net brings us deuce in the opener.

Mind games already from the eight-time champion as Federer wins the toss and tells Hurkacz to serve first. Off we go.

There's a fan a few rows down from the press seats who has a brilliant homemade sign.

"Let's go Roger", it says, but it's accompanied by the most fantastic drawing of the man himself.

    Serious artistic skills on show.

  10. Shapovalov holdspublished at 16:22 British Summer Time 7 July 2021

    *Khachanov 4-6 6-3 7-5 1-6 4-4 Shapovalov

Khachanov's third service game is the only one of the fifth set to go to deuce so far.

Shapovalov eases to 40-0 and a big serve gets him over the line after a double fault.

The players are on Centre Court and what a reception from the capacity crowd.

We've been at 50% and then 75% for Roger Federer's previous matches at Wimbledon, now it's 100% and he remains the one everyone wants to see.

  12. Khachanov holdspublished at 16:19 British Summer Time 7 July 2021

    Khachanov 4-6 6-3 7-5 1-6 4-3 Shapovalov*

There's no room for error now.

Khachanov looks set to avoid another awkward service game as he gets to 40-0 and manages to end the game three points later with a sliced backhand winner.

Progress today and Roger Federer - at 39 years and 337 days - will become the oldest man to reach the Wimbledon semi-finals in the open era.

Roger Federer has admitted that winning Wimbledon in front of no crowd would have left him with a hollow feeling.

Wimbledon was cancelled last year because of the coronavirus pandemic but the French Open, the US Open and the Australian Open all took place, with few or no spectators.

Federer, who has won Wimbledon eight times, said: “A 100% crowd is going to be incredible. Playing night session in Paris it was five people. The difference is immense.

“I tried to think back like what would it have meant for me to win Wimbledon with no crowds in a finals.

“Last year I was thinking that as I was watching guys play with very little crowd or no crowd. I felt like it probably would have taken 70 or 80% everything away from me."

    Federer v Hurkacz

    Boris Becker
Three-time Wimbledon champion on BBC TV

Federer gradually improved his form, I really liked the way he played in the last round. He's thinking about what he needs to do on the changeovers.

And... he knows how to play on this court. You can train 18 hours a day but you are never going to have the same experience than playing matches.

  18. Federer inspired me - Hurkaczpublished at 16:11 British Summer Time 7 July 2021

    Federer v Hurkacz

Hubert Hurkacz has admitted quarter-final opponent Roger Federer inspired him to take up tennis.

The 24-year-old from Poland came from two sets to one down to beat second seed Daniil Medvedev in a rain-interrupted fourth-round match, winning 2-6 7-6 (7-2) 3-6 6-3 6-3.

"Obviously Roger is a special player,” said the 14th seed. “What he’s achieved throughout his whole career, it’s unbelievable and the way he plays is special.

“Being out there against him, it’s really amazing. But obviously I’m there to play my best and give myself the best chance of winning.

“Roger was a big inspiration for me, the success he had, the way he played, how he plays in the important moment, it’s really special.”

  19. Khachanov holdspublished at 16:11 British Summer Time 7 July 2021

    Khachanov 4-6 6-3 7-5 1-6 3-2 Shapovalov*

Khachanov suffers the first dip of the fifth set, conceding three break points to the relentless Shapovalov.

The Russian does well to save the first with a clever drop shot, and Shapovalov squanders the second and third.

And from 0-40 behind, Khachanov rescues a vital hold to lead 3-2.
