  1. 'Barty's serving better than the ace queen'published at 13:44 British Summer Time 10 July 2021

    Sam Smith
Former British number one on BBC TV

Barty has ironed out a few kinks in her serve and that will matter in the key moments.

Barty's forehand - she will have to cover the Pliskova forehand, and she can hit it from any part of the court.

How can Pliskova have that great a serve, and not have won a slam?

She always was the ace queen, but she has lowered the ball toss a bit now. Barty's serving has been better.

  2. 'The most I've seen Pliskova care'published at 13:42 British Summer Time 10 July 2021

    Billie Jean King
Six-time Wimbledon champion on BBC TV

This is the most I've seen Pliskova care - she's always seemed so laid back in the past.

Pliskova has got to serve great but she has to go forward when she gets the opportunity.

Pliskova also has the soft hands - but it is the serve that dictates for her, and if she can serve like that again, she will be hard to beat.

  3. 'Barty has Plans A, B, C & D!'published at 13:41 British Summer Time 10 July 2021

    Chris Evert
18-time Grand Slam singles champion on BBC TV

    Pliskova is a power player and she doesn't have a Plan B. Barty has Plan A, B, C & D

  4. 'First thought: YES! Then... Oh Boy'published at 13:41 British Summer Time 10 July 2021

    Martina Navratilova
Nine-time Wimbledon singles champion on BBC TV

That magic moment when you wake up on the morning of the final 'YES'... and then 'Oh Boy!'

Sightlines similar but if the Centre Court roof is open, it is how the court plays. Slower might favour Barty but if the roof is closed, it could help Pliskova

They know they will play at 2pm, rain or not. There may be technical changes they need to make depending on whether the roof is on.

But it is another match - with a pretty good trophy you might get to hold at the end of it.

  5. 'The dream was to make the second week'published at 13:39 British Summer Time 10 July 2021

Five years after losing to Angelique Kerber in the US Open final, Pliskova is still trying to shake off the unwanted tag as one of the best players yet to win a major.

The Czech had only won one match in four tournaments prior to Wimbledon and she failed to go beyond the fourth round in 2018 and 2019 at SW19.

"Coming into this tournament, the dream was to make the second week because I was not in the second week for a while. I never thought about maybe going into the final," said Pliskova.

"It's not that I would be playing horrible. Sometimes you're just missing a little bit and you're not doing anything wrong.

"I think sometimes just to hang in there is super important, which I did. I didn't really change anything."

  6. Barty 'rapt' for first Wimbledon finalpublished at 13:37 British Summer Time 10 July 2021

Australia's Ashleigh Barty "couldn't be more rapt" to play for her first Wimbledon title on the 50th anniversary of her idol Evonne Goolagong Cawley's maiden win.

"To give myself a chance to create some history that's almost like a tribute to her is really exciting," said Barty.

"It's a really special anniversary for Evonne."

World number one Barty has been wearing a scallop-hemmed dress at the championships as a tribute to the one Goolagong wore when she won the title in 1971.

"I couldn't be more proud to be in a position to wear an outfit inspired by her. I couldn't be more rapt to have that opportunity to win on Saturday."

With both players competing in their first Wimbledon women's singles final, they are aiming to get their names etched on to the green honours board lined up in the underbelly of Centre Court.

However... Ash Barty's name is already inscribed down there. The Aussie, of course, won the 2011 girls' singles here.

And take a look at the name above... Not Karolina Pliskova, of course, but her twin sister Kristyna.

Karolina Pliskova has accumulated more WTA titles than Wimbledon final opponent Ashleigh Barty.

But Barty has the experience of winning a Grand Slam.

  9. Duchess out of isolation and in the Royal Boxpublished at 13:32 British Summer Time 10 July 2021

The Duchess of Cambridge had to self isolate last week after coming into contact with someone who later tested positive for coronavirus.

But she's back in the Royal Box with her husband today along with former winners Marion Bartoli, Billie Jean King, Martina Navratilova and Angela Barrett.

There is entertainment royalty too with actresses Dame Maggie Smith and Dame Penelope Keith as well as Indian star Priyanka Chopra and singers Lulu, Elaine Paige and Katherine Jenkins.

Grey clouds lurk ominously over the All England Club. No rain yet, but the meteorologists must be expecting some to arrive.

The roof is still shut on Centre Court.

With less than an hour to the women's final, people are scuttling about, either heading to Centre or Number One Court if they have tickets or to catch the wheelchair tennis and boys and girls action on the outer courts. It's a warm but overcast day at SW19 and there's been a bit of light rain around and the Wimbledon roof has been closed.

  13. 'It's a long haul'published at 13:25 British Summer Time 10 July 2021

    Billie Jean King
Six-time Wimbledon champion on BBC TV

    On final day feelings...

It's a long haul, it's not just the match, it's what you do before the match as well.

On Ashleigh Barty and Karolina Pliskova preparing side by side on Court One under the roof...

It's a big court similar to Centre Court - and that is important for space perception.

Ashleigh Barty and Karolina Pliskova were out preparing on Court One earlier today, at the same time!

  16. 'Pliskova has slight edge'published at 13:22 British Summer Time 10 July 2021

    Martina Navratilova
    Nine-time Wimbledon singles champion

No-one has been able to handle the Pliskova pace and the way she played against Sabalenka was really impressive.

It's going to be hard for Barty. On paper the numbers are in Pliskova's favour on most of the important stats, but it comes back to who can handle the pressure the better.

Barty is a disruptor, she changes the pace and takes you out of your rhythm. So the key for Pliskova is keeping that rhythm.

If she can then I think she will win because she has so much firepower. Her serve is bulletproof. She's moving better and playing better tennis overall.

It's a toss-up. I'm giving the slight edge to Pliskova, only because of the way she has been playing the last two weeks. But overall Barty is the better player.

Karolina Pliskova, meanwhile, went until the semi-finals before losing a set, coming from behind to defeat Belarusian second seed Aryna Sabalenka to prevail in her first semi-final at SW19.

The likes of French Open semi-finalist Tamara Zidansek and Russian youngster Ludmilla Samsonova were no match for the eighth seed.

Since defeating Carla Suarez Navarro in three sets in round one, Ashleigh Barty hasn't dropped a set in her last five matches on the way to the final.

The world number one dominated against compatriot Ajla Tomljanovic in the last-eight before overcoming Germany's 2018 champion Angelique Kerber in the semi-finals.
