But Berrettini now has a second break-point chance. There's only so many chances Djokovic will give him.

A perfect forehand from Djokovic right in the corner, he couldn't have placed it better with hand, sees off the break point. Deuce.

Life in this first set. Djokovic drags a forehand just wide. Berrettini with a break point he absolutely has to take.

A brilliant rally, with all sorts of excellent forehands, backhands, slices. It's called out for Djokovic and that would've been set point, but it clipped the line and we're 30-30.

Georgie Heath: Djokovic not firing at all and still offering a quiet masterclass

An ambitious drop shot from Berrettini from well behind the baseline comes up short and it's 15-15 in game nine, Djokovic three points from set one.

  7. 'Berrettini just about afloat'published at 14:53 British Summer Time 11 July 2021

    Russell Fuller
BBC tennis correspondent at Roland Garros

It's hard work for Berrettini but he's just about keeping afloat in this first set.

Games with seven deuces do not increase his chance of getting to Wembley tonight!

Turning to Centre Court and demanding more noise!

Deafening and prolonged roar as Berrettini finally gets over the line.

One woman hoists an Italian football shirt - of Totti skin-tight vintage, if you want to know - high above her head.

  9. Berrettini saves set point to holdpublished at 14:52 British Summer Time 11 July 2021

    *Djokovic 5-3 Berrettini

It's a hold, it took more than 11 minutes, but it's a hold for Berrettini.

Djokovic now serving for the first set.

Hardly rocket science, but the more first serves that Berrettini lands, the more chance he has.

That's currently down at 56%, although that figure has been bolstered in this lengthy service game.

Trouble is, though, his groundstrokes aren't firing at the moment either. Fourteen unforced errors from the Italian's racquet.

Abinash Das: Djokovic understands extremely well that the only thing that can get between him and history is he himself. He has all the skillsets and fitness in the world to get the job done and it's only the mind which he has to control at crucial moments to create history today.

Deuce, number seven. Berrettini has been fighting hard as his service game gets to the 10-minute mark. This will be a hard one to take if he loses it from here.

Darren: Berrettini isn't feeding off the crowd like he usually does. If he is to stand any chance he needs to start enjoying it. Easier said than done but otherwise he is going to need a Paul Bettany sized miracle.

Darren's referencing cheesy 2004 film 'Wimbledon' there if you're wondering.

Berrettini sends one down at 137mph to take us to deuce number five.

Gasps of shock greet the 130mph serve which Berrettini lands at 40-30.

Gasps of despair greet the almost as rapid, but wayward, forehand drive volley which follows seconds later.

Berrettini wide with a forehand from the baseline with Djokovic lurking at the net and that's a set point for Djokovic.

  18. Postpublished at 14:44 British Summer Time 11 July 2021

Berrettini has the chance to wrap up the game as he takes one full on the volley, but there's just too much excitement in the shoulder and the forehand zooms out. Deuce.

    Djokovic 5-2 Berrettini*

The unforced errors are slipping into the Berrettini game. A bad miss starts off the eighth game and he should have finished off a drop shot close to the net, but left it open for Djokovic and he didn't need to be asked twice, 15-30 on the Berrettini serve.

Love the Djokovic fan who I spotted before, sat in the right corner next to the baseline opposite the Royal Box.

With his Serbian flag tied around his shoulders and covering his chest, he leaps to his feet every time Djokovic wins a point.

When he hears another shout of support for his man from elsewhere, he grins and shakes his fist in their direction.

The passion, you love to see it.
