    Dan Evans equalled his best performance at the US Open by defeating American Marcos Giron to reach the third round.

    In a match twice stopped by rain, Evans eventually won 6-4 7-6 (7-3) 2-6 6-3 to set up today's meeting with Australia's Alexei Popyrin.

    Popyrin defeated Bulgarian 15th seed Grigor Dimitrov in straight sets.

    Evans is the final British hope in the men's singles, with only teenager Emma Raducanu left in the women's draw.

    There were a nervous few moments for British tennis fans yesterday, as British number one Dan Evans retired from his men's doubles match a day before his third-round singles tie.

    Evans, alongside compatriot Lloyd Glasspool, were trailing 7-6 (7-4) 4-6 1-2 to New Zealand's Marcus Daniell and Brazil's Marcelo Demoliner.

    Evans appeared to have discomfort in his inner thigh and withdrew from the match - however the decision is understood to be precautionary.
