Popyrin has certainly found his feet. The Australian closes into the net to put away a volley winner on his way to securing back-to-back love holds.

It's still advantage Evans in the first set. The British number one cruises to a hold to love of his own with more solid serving.

It's been a slow start from Popyrin but there are signs he is beginning to settle into the match. The 22-year-old lands another perfect drop shot on his way to an encouraging love hold.

Evans is moving well and playing with confidence, while a nervy slice from Popyrin veers wide as the Briton moves to 30-0.

The Aussie overhits and it's seven straight points for Evans at the start of this match. It won't be eight, as a neat drop shot from Popyrin catches Evans on his heels - but more importantly it is 2-0 soon after.

Well then, it's the perfect start for Dan Evans!

Dan Evans equalled his best performance at the US Open by defeating American Marcos Giron to reach the third round.

In a match twice stopped by rain, Evans eventually won 6-4 7-6 (7-3) 2-6 6-3 to set up today's meeting with Australia's Alexei Popyrin.

Popyrin defeated Bulgarian 15th seed Grigor Dimitrov in straight sets.

Evans is the final British hope in the men's singles, with only teenager Emma Raducanu left in the women's draw.

There were a nervous few moments for British tennis fans yesterday, as British number one Dan Evans retired from his men's doubles match a day before his third-round singles tie.

Evans, alongside compatriot Lloyd Glasspool, were trailing 7-6 (7-4) 4-6 1-2 to New Zealand's Marcus Daniell and Brazil's Marcelo Demoliner.

Evans appeared to have discomfort in his inner thigh and withdrew from the match - however the decision is understood to be precautionary.
