Rafael Nadal beat an impressive Cameron Norrie to reach the Australian Open fourth round and end British interest in the singles competition.

Spanish second seed Nadal was able to see off his spirited 69th-ranked opponent 7-5 6-2 7-5.

Playing in front of an empty Rod Laver Arena, Nadal did not look at his rhythmic best but he held off a confident-looking Norrie.

The 20-time Grand Slam champion will play Italy's Fabio Fognini next.

Norrie claimed the first break of the match and hung in well against Nadal, but there was no stopping the Spaniard when he upped his tempo.

Nadal showed occasional hints on serve of a back problem that has bothered him since his arrival in Australia but he moved and hit freely.

  3. 'Australia is one of the best examples in the world'published at 12:28 Greenwich Mean Time 13 February 2021

    Norrie 5-7 2-6 5-7 Nadal

On playing in front of no fans, Rafael Nadal says: "The feeling is completely different. Nobody wants this, but it's not the time to forget about the situation we're facing.

"Australia is one of the best examples in the world [for their Covid-19 response] so maximum respect for what they have been doing and hopefully the situation will improve and the crowd can come back before the end."

On his last-16 opponent Fabio Fognini, Nadal adds: "We've played a lot of times and he has beaten me before. He will be hungry to play well and has had a very impressive victory today against De Minaur in straight sets so he will come in with plenty of confidence.

"You don't expect an easy round in the round of 16 so it will be tough and I have to be ready for it."

  4. 'I have to keep improving'published at 12:23 Greenwich Mean Time 13 February 2021

And here is what Rafael Nadal has to say: "All the matches are tough, he came here winning a couple of very good matches. I didn't convert the opportunities I had so the situation became a bit more difficult.

"I'm happy, I had a few good feelings, of course I have to keep improving and tomorrow is another day to practice but into the second week and that's the main thing for me.

"I combined very good games with a couple of unforced errors that I need to fix but that's normal and hopefully that will help me for what's coming on Monday."

That's it, Rafael Nadal advances with a straight sets victory.

Cameron Norrie battled hard and can be very proud of his efforts, but the world number 69 found an in-form Nadal and the Spaniard moves into round four.

Norrie has taken it back to 30-30, thanks to a fine shot down the line, which finds the corner.

A fine rally but it ends when Norrie pulls a forehand wide and that means Nadal is two shots away from round four. 0-30.

Nadal with a cross-court winner. Norrie had to hold his serve to stay in the match a few minutes ago and that's the scenario he faces again now.

It's either going to be match over or a third set tie-break. Which way will it go?

Nadal's intensity levels have definitely dropped in the last 15 minutes or so.

We continue. Nadal only needed the game for a win, but can't get a look in in game 10 as Norrie holds to love.

Norrie's opportunities have been few and far between since the second set and Nadal's serve gets him out of a spot of bother in the ninth game.

An ace, followed by a great serve to set up a forehand winner at the net and Nadal needs just one game for the win.

A rare error from Nadal as he dumps a shot into the net and that gives Norrie an opening at 15-30. A break here would make this interesting.

An ace from Cameron Norrie and that's a good hold to keep the set interesting. That brings us to 4-4.

A bit of a break as they dry up the court, but the light rain hasn't caused too much chaos. Rafael Nadal takes an opportunity to leave the court for a bit, but we're now good to go again.

Nadal needs two games for the win, but we're still on serve in the third.

Is now the time for Norrie to find the answer to the Nadal puzzle serve? No.

A hold to love, sealed off with an inswinging serve for an ace. We have some spots of rain so time for the roof to be closed, just a bit, but not all the way.

Some good fighting spirt from Cameron Norrie as he is taken to deuce twice on his serve but gets through it and we remain on serve in the third set and this has been a decent recovery after Nadal breezed through set number two.

  19. Week two unlockedpublished at 11:48 Greenwich Mean Time 13 February 2021

    Barty 6-2 6-4 Alexandrova

World number one Ash Barty, aiming for her first Australian Open title and her second Grand Slam after winning the French Open in 2019, has moved into week two.

She saw off Russia's Ekaterina Alexandrova, the 29th seed, earlier on today thanks to a comfortable 6-2 6-4 success.

Nope. Not this time. Another hold without too much energy used up for Nadal. We thought he may be struggling with a back injury, but no signs of any weakness from Nadal and he has been superb today.
