And so after a dramatic, enduring day of tennis we have our men's finalists, and neither of them are named Rafael Nadal.

Novak Djokovic can now put his feet up and try to recover in time to face Greece's Stefanos Tsitsipas on Sunday, after the 22-year-old beat German sixth seed Alexander Zverev in a five-set epic earlier today.

Two gripping matches but wow, that second one - an absolute masterclass from Djokovic and Nadal, a tussle so good that French prime minister Jean Castex even decided to let fans at Roland Garros break France's 11pm curfew to finish watching.

But don't fret, we'll be back with you tomorrow afternoon with both live text commentary and radio coverage of the women's final in Paris, as Russia's Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova takes on Czech Barbora Krejcikova.

    We'll see you then...

  2. 'I played my best tennis'published at 22:33 British Summer Time 11 June 2021

Here is Novak Djokovic: "First I want to say it is a privilege to be on this court with Rafael Nadal. The biggest match I have ever played here in Paris. Also the best match with the best atmosphere for both players.

"To win against Rafa on this court you have to play your best tennis, and tonight I played my best tennis. It's hard to find the words to sum up how I feel. You tell yourself there is no pressure but there is.

"Pressure is a privilege - to test my game and my character in matches like this."

    Nadal 6-3 3-6 6-7 (4-7) 2-6 Djokovic

So Novak Djokovic inflicts just the third defeat Rafael Nadal has ever suffered on the Parisian clay, quite remarkable - it's the first time he has lost at the French Open since 2015, which was also to Djokovic. It means the Serb remains the only player to beat Nadal at Roland Garros in the past 12 years.

Tom Gumbleton: Incredible win for Novak, heartbreak for Nadal but these two Gladiators have shown why tennis is an incredible sport. Nothing comes close to these titans putting on such a show in a Semi Final of a Slam.

Brutal is the word. It was an outstanding contest, an absolute treat.

You couldn't have asked them to leave any more on the court than they did.

Djokovic was just too strong in every single department.

Rafael Nadal saves the first with a delightful forehand that a scampering Novak Djokovic cannot reach.

Two match points to go for the world number one.

Superb return from Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal can only cup a forehand into the tape, Djokovic pushes the defending champion deep on the next too and Nadal goes wide.

Three match points for Novak Djokovic.

This is desperately sad for Nadal fans if he doesn't go through to this final, but you can guarantee he will throw absolutely everything at it to stay in this match.

It has all just gone a little weary.

So Rafael Nadal, who has never lost a semi-final at Roland Garros, finds himself serving to stay in the match. And he starts with a double fault.

Djokovic has served well in incredibly key moments, he's returned unbelievably well and he has returned well.

It's stunning to watch. He leans in and brings down the hammer. A stunning drop shot to finish that rally. He is playing absolutely sensational tennis. He has wrestled control of this match.

That's ominous. Novak Djokovic taps his temple with a finger like a man completely in the zone, but then double faults... the Serb puffs out his cheeks instead. How a matter of moments can change the mindset.

The next serve is big and leaping out wide, and Rafael Nadal can only drag it wide. And the world number one holds after a gruelling rally by reaching into his arsenal and dragging out the deftest of drop shots. He's one game away from the final...

Nadal seems to have lost all his energy. It's just evaporated and Djokovic will sense that.

The crowd have gone a little quieter - I think they sense it as well.

Four hours in, and this is still just as absorbing a contest.

Rafael Nadal tries to get the crowd going by waving his arms in the air after a cannonball of a forehand winner. 15-15.

  18. Nadal's reign coming to an end?published at 22:12 British Summer Time 11 June 2021

Just a reminder that Nadal has only lost twice in 107 matches at Roland Garros (in 2009 to Soderling and in 2015 to Djokovic).

He has won 13 titles including the last four.

    Ruthless from the top seed.

Novak Djokovic takes the opportunity with immense pace and depth on his return and may just be edging towards the French Open final.

  20. Break point Djokovicpublished at 22:11 British Summer Time 11 June 2021

    *Nadal 6-3 3-6 6-7 (4-7) 2-3 Djokovic

Well, Nadal had the whole court to aim for but he opts to go back towards where Djokovic is standing and the world number one reads it to win the point.

And that's unusual from the Spaniard, a framed backhand that spins wildly and seems to float in slow motion before dropping agonisingly wide. Break point Djokovic.
