US Open champion Daniil Medvedev - now the favourite for the men's title because of the absence of Novak Djokovic - has just finished off his first-round match on Rod Laver Arena.

The 25-year-old Russian has beaten Swiss Henri Laaksonen 6-1 6-4 7-3 (7-3).

Medvedev was broken in the first game of the match but than rattled through the opening set.

He was made to work harder from there but has completed the job and is through in an hour and 54 minutes.

His next opponent? Well, either Nick Kyrgios or British qualifier Liam Broady.

Those two meet later under the lights on the John Cain Arena where Murray and Basilashvili are currently doing battle.

Murray hangs in, moves forward when he can, and a whirling drop shot outfoxes Basilashvili.

The Brit is in front once again.

Murray isn't a happy bunny but he's got himself a break point as Basilashvili takes the ball out of the air and whacks it off court.

Super defence from Murray but he falls just short as he attempts to charge down a Basilashvili drop shot.

Murray is feeling it - he's leaning over after that rally. These points are physical with so much at stake.

Murray clings on to a rally but eventually his backhand falters, and he stops for a moment, hand holding his left knee as he faces another break point.

Brilliant depth from Basilashvili but Murray is, somehow, always there, forcing him to keep pushing, and the Georgian eventually pushes a backhand out.

Murray is in front for the first time, but this time Basilashvili makes a cross-court backhand to keep it at deuce.

And now Basilashvili makes a horrid miss with a strike down the line!

Murray isn't having much luck wih his first serve, and a netted backhand gifts Basilashvili two break back points.

Trouble brewing, as Murray finds himself 0-30 down.

Heather Watson is battling hard in the third set against Mayar Sherif.

The Egyptian broke for a 4-3 lead in the second set and although Watson had a point to break straight back, she sent a backhand return wide.

Sherif served for the set but Watson broke back, keeping the score tied at 5-5.

Murray isn't going anywhere, though, and we're back at deuce.

A one-two punch gets Basilashvili back in front, but another sloppy miss costs him.

Basilashvili finally gets his nose in front with a thunderous forehand and a shout of annoyance.

Murray furiously chunters to himself, his coaches, anyone who is listening, and then finds his way back to deuce with a lovely backhand that Basilashvili can't return.

Make that back-to-back aces!
