    *Stephens 0-6 1-0 Raducanu

For what it's worth, the win predictor has Emma Raducanu at a 93% chance of success.

Stephens showed in that last game, which lasted more than 10 minutes, that she is going to fight for everything though.

  3. Stephens gets the breakpublished at 11:42 Greenwich Mean Time 18 January 2022

    *Stephens 0-6 1-0 Raducanu

Raducanu is having to go on the defensive and Stephens sent a forehand long when the Briton was at the net.

That was on break point four, but break point five is just around the corner.

And this time the American gets there, courtesy of a double fault from Raducanu.

Raducanu a set up, Stephens, having been bageled in set one, has a break at the start of the second.

The crowd are stretching their vocal cords for both players. A rare winner from Stephens is greeted with gusto. Nobody wants their night out on Court to end early doors.

    Stephens 0-6 0-0 Raducanu*

Stephens sent a tame backhand halfway up the net on her first break-point chance of the match and followed that up by sending a looping forehand long with her second opportunity.

After a brilliant lengthy rally Stephens got a bit lucky with the ball flicking off the tape before brutally dispatching a two-handed backhand into the corner.

Deuce, for the third time, and it is the longest game of the match by miles. Eight minutes this one, the whole first set only lasted 17.

    Stephens 0-6 0-0 Raducanu*

Stephens collected just four points in six games in set one, she has already picked up three in the first game of the second set and is hoping to convert this break-point chance following a Raducanu double fault.

You know what I'm feeling perky after that set. I've had 17 minutes worth of coffee.

Stephens just picked up four points in that opening set. One to wipe out from the memory banks and pretend the match starts now.

  10. Has Stephens practiced?published at 11:29 Greenwich Mean Time 18 January 2022

I don't know what to say. I'm very pleasantly surprised with how this match is going. I think Sloane is showing a bit of lack of practice. It doesn't look like she's spent much time [on the court] in the off season.

Then again she could have spent loads of time but it's hard to tell.

    Stephens 0-6 Raducanu*

Who could've predicted this start? Sloane Stephens, trying to fend off two break points, sends one down the line but it is out and that's the first set for Raducanu.

Seventeen minutes is all it took, and she's halfway to round two.

    Absolutely brilliant from 19-year-old Raducanu.

Last week in Sydney, Raducanu won one game against Elena Rybakina and lost in 55 minutes.

What a difference a week makes.

Not sure Raducanu is going to spend even that long on court today - for wildly different reasons.

    Russell Fuller

She is absolutely flying in this first match. Different city but the same Raducanu so far [from the US Open].

Everything is falling into place so far, Stephens has won just three points so far.

Stephens has won three points, Raducanu 19.

Make that 20, with a lightning fast hold to love and in a blink of an eye it's 5-0 to Raducanu, one game away from the opening set.

    Stunning from the 19-year-old.

That's a fantastic rally rom Raducanu, she really mixed up the height of the ball nicely. You have to be smart enough to use the wind when you can.
