I am pleased that [Ebden and Purcell] have made some sort of inroads into Kyrgios's game... but no reward for it in the end.

    Kyrgios/Kokkinakis 5-5 Ebden/Purcell*

Did he mean to leave that!? Kyrgios swipes at a ball but then retracts his racquet in mid flight and it drops long. He holds! Just.

    *Kyrgios/Kokkinakis 4-5 Ebden/Purcell

Big serve from the main protagonist in this final and his bezzie mate Kokkinakis slaps it away on the volley for good measure. Kyrgios can't put Ebden away though and we're back to deuce.

    *Kyrgios/Kokkinakis 4-5 Ebden/Purcell

A spot of bother for the Special Ks... Kyrgios flunks a forehand long and that's deuce.

    *Kyrgios/Kokkinakis 4-5 Ebden/Purcell

So Nick Kyrgios finds himself serving to stay in the opening set, but edges to a 30-0 lead before Matthew Ebden is presented the chance to pop away a volley.

Kyrgios responds by lobbing both and hollering "yeah, boy" at his effort before it even anchors down. What a beaut. 40-30.

    *Kyrgios/Kokkinakis 4-5 Ebden/Purcell

Kokkinakis must have a deal with that net cord... another drops in his favour, this time a forehand that skims up and over the waiting racquet of Purcell.

The visor-topped Purcell eventually gets over the line.

    Kyrgios/Kokkinakis 4-4 Ebden/Purcell*

"Yeah, let's go!" says Purcell after winning a third successive point with a serve that cannot be returned. Kokkinakis turns to some power of his own, a fierce forehand for deuce.

    Kyrgios/Kokkinakis 4-4 Ebden/Purcell*

    Kyrgios/Kokkinakis 4-4 Ebden/Purcell*

  12. Postpublished at 11:35 Greenwich Mean Time 29 January 2022

    Kyrgios/Kokkinakis 4-4 Ebden/Purcell*

A second ace of the match for Thanasi Kokkinakis. That'll do the trick. The Aussie wins motors to 40-15 on his serve with a dipping forehand before Max Purcell finds some troubling depth on his return. It's a brief blemish as Kokkinakis holds. It remains all square.

"Incredible reflexes from Purcell, just limiting the options.

"It's the best that doubles has to offer, angles, skills on display and a bit of power."

    *Kyrgios/Kokkinakis 3-4 Ebden/Purcell

Brilliant! What a point that is. Nick Kyrgios manages to find more angles than a Trigonometry class as the Special Ks win the point and then at 40-15 down loops one through his legs, before Thanasi Kokkinakis whips a winner down the line.

Ebden and Purcell come through to hold, but the entertainment has begun.

  15. Postpublished at 11:27 Greenwich Mean Time 29 January 2022

    Kyrgios/Kokkinakis 3-3 Ebden/Purcell*

Another solid service game from Nick Kyrgios, although he fails to find the channel with Matthew Ebden lurking to tickle it away before Thanasi Kokkinakis wraps up the hold.

Someone in the crowd waves a box of Special K around!

Neither pair have been able to break serve yet.

    *Kyrgios/Kokkinakis 2-3 Ebden/Purcell

Big fan of Thanasi Kokkinakis' shorts - although they might look more suited to the beach than the final of a Grand Slam.

Max Purcell signs off a love hold with an ace that skips beyond his opponent before he can blink.

  18. Postpublished at 11:20 Greenwich Mean Time 29 January 2022

    Kyrgios/Kokkinakis 2-2 Ebden/Purcell*

A nice little exchange between Kyrgios and Kokkinakis brings a chuckle from the crowd, and then they hold. Important to back the chatter up.

    *Kyrgios/Kokkinakis 1-2 Ebden/Purcell

Miles Maclagan, former British Davis Cup player, on Eurosport:

"Ebden doesn't quite possess the power of his opponents, so looking more for precise placement.

    "Athletic from Purcell."
