The Spaniard brings on overhead crashing down and hits another couple of winners on the forehand on his way to a love hold.

    *Thompson 1-1 Nadal

Rafael Nadal is up and running on Court Philippe Chatrier.

Australia's Jordan Thompson has made a decent start though, holding in the opening game before taking a couple of points as he gets a first look at the Nadal serve.

  8. Norrie holds servepublished at 15:08 British Summer Time 23 May 2022

    Norrie 5-5 Guinard*

Manuel Guinard gets into several horrible tangles behind the baseline, ankles twisting horribly as he slips and slides, and Cam Norrie can put away a volley with ease.

This is the best service game that Norrie has had for some time, and an ace out wide wraps up a hold to 15.

By his usual cucumber-cool standards, Cam Norrie looked a little flustered at the changeover.

One suspects he will settle down, click into gear and have enough quality to beat a largely unheralded opponent.

A piece in L’Equipe today - a French-speaking colleague reliably informs - claimed Guinard was not even the best player at his club in his younger years.

    *Evans 4-3 Cerundolo

Having broken Francisco Cerundolo, Dan Evans comfortably holds serve to edge ahead.

No fewer than 12 unforced errors from Cerundolo already, compared to three from Evans, but the Argentine holds his third service game to love to move level once again.

Evans responds strongly, however, and it's 4-3 in the Briton's favour. Tough to call this opening set.

  11. Guinard a game away from first setpublished at 15:04 British Summer Time 23 May 2022

    *Norrie 4-5 Guinard

"Allez!" comes the cry as Manuel Guinard works his way to 30-15.

Wallop! A giant ace goes fizzing past Cameron Norrie and, after leading by a break, the Brit will have to serve to stay in the set.

Manuel Guinard’s reaction summed it up. After dumping that return into the net on break point in the sixth game he looked up to the heavens, pressed his fingers together and pushed them skywards.

He knew that was his chance. He probably didn’t expect to get another one in Norrie’s next service game.

But he did, thanks to some wayward returning from the British number one.

“Allez!” was the reaction this time as the home fans chanted his name while clapping in rhythmic time.

    Russell Fuller

Cameron Norrie got himself into a bit of a mess again on serve.

Guinard has broken back to love - and this is not taking the path we expected it to when Norrie broke for an early lead.

    *Norrie 4-3 Guinard

Cameron Norrie is not enjoying the new tennis balls that he's serving with.

He quickly finds himself 0-30 down and he's in even more trouble as a long backhand hands Manuel Guinard three break points.

  16. Nadal goes for number 14 - and 22published at 14:58 British Summer Time 23 May 2022

    Thompson v Nadal

Rafael Nadal is chasing a record-extending 14th title at Roland Garros, and a 22nd Grand Slam.

But the Spaniard, who is in the same half of the draw as reigning champion Novak Djokovic, continues to struggle with the foot condition that threatened to end his career.

"The pain is there always. It's not going to disappear now. It's about if the pain is high and strong enough to allow me to play with real chances or not," Nadal said.

"My real goal is to put myself in a position that I am healthy and playing enough good tennis to give myself good chances.

"The results say that I am not the favourite [to win], but that is something that never worried me much."

    Evans 2-2 Cerundolo*

Dan Evans fails to convert another FIVE break points to immediately hit back after Cerundolo's break of serve in the third game.

But he manages to manufacture a sixth. Can he take this one? Yes he can!

That's big. Impressive resilience from Evans to stop the South American taking a two-game lead.

Norrie gets the typical reaction from a French crowd when he questions whether a shot from Guinard was in or not.

    It was.
