  3. 'Gauff has to push Swiatek around'published at 14:12 British Summer Time 4 June 2022

    Swiatek 0-0 Gauff*

    Naomi Cavaday
    BBC Sport tennis commentator

It's quite a change for Coco Gauff with her defensive work and counterpunching. She is finding so much pace there but she has to find a way to push Swiatek around.

She can't play the way she has been playing - she has to try and get on the front foot.

    Swiatek 0-0 Gauff*

Iga Swiatek always wants to get off to a fast start - she's broken her opponents serve in their first service game in the majority of her matches so far.

She gets the first point on the Coco Gauff serve as the American misses a forehand, before Gauff double faults for 0-30.

They are both a bundle of energy - Gauff doing tuck jumps almost as high as the net, Swiatek doing fast feet and shadow swings.

They are both trying to show off, show who has the most energy out there!

There is a friendly and warm relationship building between Gauff and Swiatek.

Although the Polish player said in her BBC Sport column they don't talk loads because they are both "shy" and "introverted" in the locker room.

And they certainly won't be talking about music. Very different tastes. While Swiatek pumps out Led Zep and AC/DC, Gauff is more into Kendrick Lamar and Jaden.

"I'm listening to a playlist called Rap, and I can't say the next word," she laughed.

"But it's a playlist of a bunch of like hard-core rap songs that I put together that get me hyped for the match."

Both players are so young but seem so mature. They both understand there is more to life than tennis.

It is so gruelling but you have to enjoy your tennis, and it's good that Swiatek took that little break (missing Madrid).

  11. 'There is more to life than tennis'published at 14:07 British Summer Time 4 June 2022

    Swiatek v Gauff

Coco Gauff, speaking about her new attitude to tennis: "I think there's a fine line between believing in yourself and almost pushing yourself too much.

"If I do lift the trophy, honestly, I don't think my life is going to change really.

"The people who love me are still going to love me regardless if I lift the trophy or not.

"I feel like I put myself in a bubble to the point where it was like tennis, tennis, tennis, tennis.

"Talking to my family in general, my grandmother is always like there is more to life than this."

We've known since she burst on to the scene as a 15-year-old in 2019 that Coco Gauff is special.

Not only on the court but in the media room too.

The American teenager is not afraid to say what she thinks and spoke out about gun crime in the US after her semi-final win.

"I feel like a lot of times we're put in a box that people always say, 'sports and politics should stay separate'," said Gauff.

"I say yes, but also at the same time I'm a human first before I'm a tennis player."

Watching and listening to her on Thursday felt like we were seeing a sports star who will be a spokesperson for her generation - a la Serena Williams - for years to come.

Coco Gauff first rose to prominence at Wimbledon in 2019 when, as a 15-year-old, she reached the fourth round.

After coming through qualifying, Gauff beat Venus Williams on her Slam main draw debut and saw off Magdalena Rybarikova and Polona Hercog before losing to eventual champion Simona Halep.

Since then she has risen steadily up the rankings and claimed two WTA singles titles, along with four doubles.

In fact, she's still in contention to win the women's doubles at Roland Garros - she and Jessica Pegula will face former champions Kiki Mladenovic and Caroline Garcia tomorrow.
