Ashic: Even in Rome, Rafael Nadal had foot issues. It's certain that that hasn't gone away. He's played through it. And he's achieved his greatest Roland Garros triumph yet... beating four of the top 10, including Djokovic. Greatest of all time in the men's game? Definitely.

We haven't seen the limp on the clay courts. But he was limping in Australia. The problem is worse on hard courts, but maybe clay and grass - he can play.

I do hope his career can continue. He is one of the greats of our game.

His foot is being held on, and that is not a good quality of life long-term. Maybe he doesn't want this anymore - that point is going to come.

Does he bow out before he starts to decline?

Rafael Nadal wins the last 11 games of the final to win a 14th Roland Garros final. 22 Grand Slams in total. The oldest champion in Roland Garros history.

    Exhausted but triumphant.

We weren't even sure if Rafael Nadal would play at this tournament after struggling with the foot injury that has dogged his career, but he has been absolutely superb.

He came from behind to defeat Felix Auger-Aliassime in round four, eliminated Novak Djokovic in a late-night thriller in the quarters, then was ahead against Alexander Zverev, who had to withdraw after a horror injury, and has been way too good today for eighth seed Casper Ruud in the final.

There looks to be some tears in the Nadal eyes as he signs 'the camera'.

The ease of the victory should not detract at all from the achievement. Nadal will have beaten four Top 10 players to win the French Open for the first time in his career.

He felt very bad about his chances when his foot was a major issue in Rome. He's been moving fantastically well - all things considered.

It is a very forlorn walk from Ruud as Nadal wins a 10th successive game.

  17. Nadal one game from the titlepublished at 16:27 British Summer Time 5 June 2022

    Nadal 6-3 6-3 5-0 Ruud*

Ruud goes long and it's hard to not feel sorry for him. He's had a brilliant tournament but he's being schooled today.

He's only 23 though and a great talent, his time will come. Nadal is 5-0 ahead in the third, has won 10 games in a row and only needs one more for victory.

A two-handed backhand into the net from Nadal is only the sixth point Ruud has won in this set, which we're in the fifth game of, 30-15.

Ruud will know he has lost nine games in a row and it is hard to deal with mentally.

He obviously had huge dreams and aspirations to win - but with every game he loses he will know he was up in the second set.
