Former British number one at Flushing Meadows
For most of that match, Serena played phenomenal, and we started thinking 'what if'?
It's probably the best match, start to finish, that I've ever seen Ajla play. For Serena, it was the most fitting end, because right up until that last ball, she gave everything. She committed to playing free, fun tennis. It looked like she had the best time. She could not have done any more.

Ajla Tomljanovic, speaking after her win:
"I'm feeling really sorry just because I love Serena just as much as you guys do. What she's done for me, for the sport of tennis, is incredible
"I never thought I'd have a chance to play her in her last match when I remember watching her in all those finals, so this is a surreal moment for me.
"I just thought she would beat me, so the pressure wasn't on me. Even to the last point, I knew that she's in a position to win even when she's down 5-1.
"That's just who she is and she's the greatest of all time. Period."

As a way to go out, this has been perfect. She gave us one of the nights of our lives. I've been doing this job for eight or nine years and it is hard to think of anything that has matched that.
No-one will ever forget this night, this atmosphere, this ovation, this incredibly fitting way for the career of the greatest of all time to come to an end.

More from Serena Williams: "To everyone in that box, it's been a fun ride. It's been the most incrdible ride and journey I have ever been on in my life.
"I'm so grateful to every single person that has ever said 'go Serena!' in their life. I'm just so grateful. You got me here.
