    Norrie 6-3 3-2 Lestienne*

Norrie gets stuck into the Lestienne serve and quickly establishes a 0-30 lead, but a couple of unforced errors deny him the chance to apply some pressure for now.

That's a miss from the Frenchman though!

    Break point.

I liken this to playing against Mansour Bahrami. He was always trying trickery out there. You wanted to watch but you had to keep on your toes. if you stuck to your tactics you could really take the racket out of his hands.

An easier game for Cam Norrie as he holds to 15. His forehand is starting to fire.

  4. 'Norrie just wants to play normal tennis'published at 12:29 Greenwich Mean Time 18 January 2023

Commentator on BBC Radio 5 Sports Extra

I do think that is part of Lestienne's tactic - to give you a different look at every ball. Cam Norrie is a bit more of a 'meat and potatoes' player - he just want to play normal tennis.

This is a good old test of Norrie's mental strength.

    *Norrie 6-3 2-2 Lestienne

Blimey, who is this Constant Lestienne and what has he done with first set Constant Lestienne? A corker of a backhand planted in the corner hands him game point at 40-15 on his serve, though Cam Norrie then responds with a sublime shot of his own.

Norrie has had to step up here and he has, more excellent play to level at deuce. This is turning into a real thriller of a contest.

It's the Brit who gets the first advantage and has an immediate opportunity to break back. He can't do so, and he casts a frustrated figure.

But he gets himself a second break point and this time he makes it count with a genius short play at the net.

For Lestienne at 30 years old to be playing his first Grand Slam - what an achievement.

Morph Benoit Paire and Fabrice Santoro and add Corentin Moutet and voila.

    Norrie 6-3 1-2 Lestienne*

A missed opportunity for Norrie? At 30-0 up, he gradually allows Lestienne back into the game to level at deuce.

Norrie gets the advantage but an enormous forehand from Lestienne brings him level once again. From there, Norrie sends a forehand well over the baseline, handing Lestienne a break point, and then the break with a wide shot.

    Well, well, well.

There is a constant change of pace and spins has helped elevate Lestienne to this level. He must be a very annoying player to face.

    *Norrie 6-3 1-1 Lestienne

Lestienne's started to make some friends now. He's high-fiving fans on the side of the court when he wanders over to his towel box.

He goes 40-15 up on serve but Norrie grabs back a point with lovely positioning at the net.

It's not enough though as he sends a backhand long to hand Lestienne the hold.

  10. 'Norrie is not sure what he's going to get next'published at 12:09 Greenwich Mean Time 18 January 2023

    Norrie 6-3 1-0 Lestienne*

    Annabel Croft
Former British number one on BBC Radio 5 Sports Extra

It is so unusual - I have not really seen a player like this - Lestienne is giving a lot of spins, different heights of balls to Norrie. It does require a lot of concentration because Norrie is never sure what he's going to get next.

I think Norrie is not in the mood to get engaged by all these antics.

    Norrie 6-3 1-0 Lestienne*

Lestienne's clearly given himself a talking to in the toilets, fighting for every point and earning himself a break point in Norrie's first service game of the second set.

Norrie, struggling with his ball toss as he did in the first set, pegs him back for deuce, going on to take the advantage before finding the net off the forehand. He squanders a second chance as Lestienne continues to give him the runaround.

On his third advantage, Norrie seals the all-important hold with an ace.

    *Norrie 6-3 0-0 Lestienne

While Lestienne takes a bathroom break, it looks as though the three fans heckling him have been escorted out of the stands, each clutching a drink and looking like they're having the time of their lives.

A rendition of 'Lestienne's going home' was their last act.

  13. 'What a bonkers way to play a match'published at 11:58 Greenwich Mean Time 18 January 2023

    *Norrie 6-3 0-0 Lestienne

    David Law
Commentator on BBC Radio 5 Sports Extra

What is he doing! Constant Lestienne's comparison to Benoit Paire is justified. His attitude is appalling.

He rolled a serve in as if he really doesn't care. It is as if he is playing an exhibition in the local park.

What a bonkers way to play a match.

  14. Game and first set Norriepublished at 11:57 Greenwich Mean Time 18 January 2023

    *Norrie 6-3 0-0 Lestienne

Lestienne's not enjoying the atmosphere out there as he's jeered by the few in attendance. He's letting it get to him too, as he lets a 30-0 lead slip and hands Norrie set point at 40-30.

Norrie seals it with an overhead smash after Lestienne goes for the hot dog lob and it seems as though he's well on top in this one now.

One hour to go until the midnight curfew...

  15. Postpublished at 11:54 Greenwich Mean Time 18 January 2023

    Norrie 5-3 Lestienne*

"Engerland, Engerland, Engerlaaaaand", sing some of the few in the crowd. Who wants to tell them Norrie was born in South Africa to a Scottish father and Welsh mother...

Norrie rattles off a love hold and he's one game away from the opening set.

  16. 'Lestienne is fuming'published at 11:52 Greenwich Mean Time 18 January 2023

    *Norrie 4-3 Lestienne

    David Law
Commentator on BBC Radio 5 Sports Extra

This is all a bit awkward with spectators heckling Lestienne after he refused to play.

Lestienne's irritation is there for all to see, he is jabbering away at the umpire, and I don't think he wants to be out there.

Somebody in the crowd has just shouted 'Come on mate, we've waited all day for this'.

    The locals are not happy.

Lestienne is fuming and his bad mood is about to get worse.

There we have it, Cam Norrie finally gets the first break of the day as Lestienne's indecisiveness over which shot to play costs him.

  18. Postpublished at 11:49 Greenwich Mean Time 18 January 2023

    *Norrie 3-3 Lestienne

As the rain continues to fall around them, it's no issue for Norrie as he finds himself with two break points on Lestienne's serve.

Can he convert one? He's going to have to wait as the chair umpire inspects the court and the ballkids come on with towels.

  19. Postpublished at 11:46 Greenwich Mean Time 18 January 2023

Finally, Cam Norrie gets the hold. He had a lot of pressure on his shoulders during that game but he battled through it.

We're still on serve in this first set.
