    Raducanu 3-6 6-7 (4-7) Gauff

That first ever meeting between Emma Raducanu and Coco Gauff suggests we have plenty to look forward to in the future.

Raducanu is still yet to make a major third round since her shock 2021 US Open win, but that was an encouraging display as she works her way back to full fitness following a series of injuries over the past 12 months.

Andy Murray finally has news of his second-round opponent - he'll play Thanasi Kokkinakis on Thursday after the Australian wrapped up his first-round win over Fabio Fognini, more than 24 hours after the match started.

Rain delays meant it was suspended on Tuesday with Kokkinakis 6-1 6-2 4-2 up, but he was forced to wait until around 20:30 local time on Wednesday to get back on court and see it out.

The exuberant celebration and deep panting at the net indicates how tough that was for Coco Gauff.

The pair, who have been pally on the tour, share a warm hug at the net.

Raducanu's head is bowed before she raises it to wave farewell, with the applause of the appreciative crowd ringing in her ears.

Plenty to be proud of and build on for the British number one.

I think we ought to take a breath after that one. Her reaction - just so much tension had built up inside her. Gauff was battling some inner demons with what was going on on the forehand side.

    Raducanu 3-6 6-7 (4-7) Gauff

Emma Raducanu saves the first match point with an excellent backhand and Coco Gauff is unable to take her second opportunity.

But a lob sees Raducanu net and that is that! Huge relief for Gauff, who lets it all out as her victory is confirmed.

Raducanu was doing all the right things but sometimes tennis is a cruel sport and she was not getting on the winning end of things.

You have to admire Coco's character out here. She has had lots of moments like this but she's a great fighter. She's a problem solver.

So unfortunate for Emma Raducanu, who catches the cord from the baseline.

    Raducanu 3-6 6-6 (2-4) Gauff*

A miss from Raducanu hands the advantage to Gauff, and it's a case of another opportunity missed for the Briton as she fires a forehand wide of the mark.

Despite some great play, she finds herself 4-2 down and Gauff is three points away.

    Raducanu 3-6 6-5 Gauff*

    Annabel Croft
Former British number one on BBC Radio 5 Sports Extra

It just feels like you are watching someone with half the repertoire at the moment.

Gauff just doesn't trust the forehand. It's painful to watch, and it has always been there, even when she was a junior.

Hat's off to Emma to get it where Gauff is so doubtful of it.

This is tense and all very exciting.

The atmosphere is really cranking up inside Rod Laver Arena.

More 'oohs' and 'aahs' than your local Bonfire Night fireworks.

While there are errors from both racquets, there is a heap of quality in these rallies which will be leaving everyone here keen to see this match-up develop into a long rivalry.

  19. Raducanu holds servepublished at 09:47 Greenwich Mean Time 18 January 2023

    Raducanu 3-6 6-5 Gauff*

This is a very different Emma Raducanu now to the one we saw at the start of this match.

She lands her first ace on her way to a 40-0 lead as she looks to put the pressure swiftly back on to Coco Gauff.

It will be a love hold too. Another chance to test Gauff's mettle.

  20. Gauff holds servepublished at 09:44 Greenwich Mean Time 18 January 2023

    *Raducanu 3-6 5-5 Gauff

    Somehow, Coco Gauff hangs on.

Two set points missed for Emma Raducanu. How much will that play on her mind? The Briton is in the ascendancy and Gauff's nervousness is giving Raducanu increasing confidence.
