    Murray 1-0 Kokkinakis*

Thanasi Kokkinakis had plenty of nice things to say about Andy Murray ahead of this one: "Andy is someone I respect a great amount.

"He was someone when I came on to tour that was always willing to give some advice. We get along really well.

"I remember watching him when I was younger, thinking this dude looks moody as hell, he looks miserable.

"Then when you get to know him, he is actually a ripper bloke and a good guy."

Kokkinakis goes for another forehand winner and this one goes long. A smooth start for Murray, who looks in good nick after his first-round five-setter.

    *Murray 0-0 Kokkinakis

There is still some Murray support in the house though, judging by the reaction to his first serve-and-volley winner.

He's 30-0 up quick as a flash but Kokkinakis rips a huge forehand to make it 30-15 to the delight of his fans.

    Hold the phone.

A resurgence from Couacaud? He storms his way to a love hold and that will be hopefully give the 27-year-old a spark again.

    Murray v Kokkinakis

Kokkinakis, who won the men’s doubles here last year with Nick Kyrgios, beat Italian Fabio Fognini a first-round match that took place across 24 hours due to several rain delays.

Former world number one Murray pulled off a dramatic five-set win over Italian 13th seed Matteo Berrettini on Tuesday.

    As you were.

A hold to 15 for Djokovic, finished with a flourish at the net.

Couacaud has it all to do and those in his box have concern etched on their faces.

  8. Murray ranked higher, but Kokkinakis the favouritepublished at 11:16 Greenwich Mean Time 19 January 2023

    Murray v Kokkinakis

Five-time Australian Open finalist Andy Murray is aiming to reach the third round in Melbourne for the first time in six years.

The 35-year-old is currently ranked 49th in the world and faces Australian 26-year-old Thanasi Kokkinakis, who is world number 159 but is favourite with the bookmakers to win.

Djokovic is constantly protecting that leg and it is making it complicated for himself.

I think he is resigned to the fact that everything is a bit difficult today.

    Couacaud 1-6 7-6 (7-5) 1-3 Djokovic*

    A topsy-turvy game, that one.

Djokovic has a wry smile on his face as he earns another break point, but he can't convert it as he pushes a return just a little too long.

He's having fun with the crowd now, an over-the-top look to the skies as he mis-placed that shot.

Two further break point opportunities come and go from deuce, and Djokovic saves a Couacaud game point, before Djokovic squanders yet another break point.

Chances missed, Couacaud holds and will be relieved to get a game on the board.

    Russell Fuller

As we have seen many times, we need to see Djokovic let out his frustrations as we saw with him against the crowd supporting Couacaud. Then he has the ability to just flick the switch.

Not sure what someone in the crowd said, but Djokovic said thank you and has a broad smile on his face. Winning the crowd back over.

I think that is what the doctor ordered for Djokovic. Get off to a fast start and reset everything.

And it is hard for a lower-ranked player to play for five sets and be in for the long haul.

One is all that is needed.

Outstanding play from the fourth seed and he seals the break with a powerful forehand down the line after sending Couacaud all over the place.

He's yet to drop a point in the third set. A statement of intent.

Couacaud points to himself and says to the crowd 'this is about me now.'

And Djokovic sits down against a guy who has only ever watched him on television.
