    Couacaud 1-6 7-6 (7-5) 0-0 Djokovic*

    SECOND SET GOES TO COUACAUD.

Wow! What a set from the French qualifier. He wins the tie-break 7-5.

Scrap that, Couacaud again cancels out that mini-break AND THEN GETS ONE OF HIS OWN as Djokovic double faults.

    SET POINT COUACAUD.

Djokovic puts his finger to his ear as if to say I'll take all of you on.

    Couacaud 1-6 6-6 (4-5) Djokovic*

    This is astonishing tennis.

Djokovic gets the mini-break back and cups his hand to his ear as if to say "where's my support?"

It is never easy when you have a really plucky, spirted opponent at the other end.

You would not pick Djokovic to come off second best in long rallies.

The crowd are excited and they are right behind Couacaud.

  6. Tie-breakpublished at 10:51 Greenwich Mean Time 19 January 2023

    Couacaud 1-6 6-6 (3-3) Djokovic*

    There it is.

Coaucaud is level in the tie-break.

  7. Postpublished at 10:50 Greenwich Mean Time 19 January 2023

    Couacaud 1-6 6-6 (2-3) Djokovic*

    I stand corrected.

Couacaud gets the two points on his serve and just needs to cancel out that mini-break to be right back in this.

  8. Tie-breakpublished at 10:47 Greenwich Mean Time 19 January 2023

    *Couacaud 1-6 6-6 (0-3) Djokovic

An immediate mini-break for Djokovic and you can't help but feel this tie-break is going to be one-way traffic from here.

  9. Postpublished at 10:46 Greenwich Mean Time 19 January 2023

    *Couacaud 1-6 6-6 (0-0) Djokovic

    Annabel Croft
Former British number one on BBC Radio 5 Sports Extra

There is not a lot Djokovic can do when Couacaud is just teeing off. The last thing he wants to do is have an extended match. He just wants to get off this court as soon as possible.

  10. Postpublished at 10:45 Greenwich Mean Time 19 January 2023

    *Couacaud 1-6 6-6 Djokovic

    Strap in, we're heading for a tie-break!

Djokovic holds to 15 in a game that wasn't as one-sided as the scoreline suggests.

  11. 'Djokovic sarcastically applauds crowd'published at 10:41 Greenwich Mean Time 19 January 2023

    Couacaud 1-6 6-5 Djokovic*

    David Law
Commentator on BBC Radio 5 Sports Extra

It is difficult to read what has happened. I think Djokovic has become irritated by how he doesn't feel great. He is letting us know he is not happy.

Couacaud just seems to be saving his best stuff when he needs it.

And it is scrambling my brain watching Djokovic struggle like this.

He is sarcastically applauding the crowd for getting behind his opponent.

  12. Postpublished at 10:40 Greenwich Mean Time 19 January 2023

    Couacaud 1-6 6-5 Djokovic*

Djokovic does seem to have a bit more about him now, though he won't be enjoying the growing support in the crowd for the man on the other side of the net.

From 40-15 down, Djokovic levels at deuce and then cancels out Couacaud's advantage with a powerful forehand down the line.

Couacaud twice averts the danger when Djokovic gets consecutive break points, and huge roars erupt in his box as he finally gets the hold. He's got himself a tie-break in this second set at the very minimum.

  13. 'More energy for Djokovic'published at 10:35 Greenwich Mean Time 19 January 2023

    *Couacaud 1-6 5-5 Djokovic

    Annabel Croft
Former British number one on BBC Radio 5 Sports Extra

Djokovic looked like he brought about a bit more energy and he looks a bit calmer, because he was getting wound up.

There has to be a point when Couacaud gets a bit jittery - does he believe that he can beat Novak Djokovic, a 21-time Grand Slam champion?

  14. Postpublished at 10:34 Greenwich Mean Time 19 January 2023

    *Couacaud 1-6 5-5 Djokovic

Djokovic holds the first point but slams a cross-court forehand attempt into the net and, upon landing, seems to feel some pain.

Couacaud is well in this game, courtesy of Djokovic errors, but the Serb battles to the hold as Couacaud struggles to return a serve on advantage.

    Couacaud 1-6 5-4 Djokovic*

Djokovic has returned to court with his hamstring re-strapped but he's hardly walking freely.

    Let's see how this goes.

  16. Bencic takes first set as Murray waitspublished at 10:26 Greenwich Mean Time 19 January 2023

    Liu 6-7 (3-7) Bencic

If you’re waiting for Andy Murray… wait a little longer.

The first set has just finished in the match before his on Margaret Court.

Twelfth seed Belinda Bencic wrapped up the first one 7-6 (7-3) against American world number 62 Claire Liu.

Murray will play Australian Thanasi Kokkinakis after this.

  17. 'Djokovic not walking very well'published at 10:24 Greenwich Mean Time 19 January 2023

    Couacaud 1-6 5-4 Djokovic*

    Annabel Croft
Former British number one on BBC Radio 5 Sports Extra

Djokovic is not walking very well - it is ok but it looks like he is favouring one leg. He went through such a rigorous routine but there was one lunge off a serve, and that was when you knew that there was a problem.

The physio will either warm up the leg so he can move and carry on - or he will be told it is damaging - and that is not great.

A trainer has come on to court and Djokovic is receiving some attention.

    David Law
Commentator on BBC Radio 5 Sports Extra

Djokovic is chuntering away to his support team - maybe for a drink for some more energy.

It is Couacaud who is roaring and getting all excited.

Djokovic hops on one leg and we will turn to the tunnel to see if a trainer comes. He is not happy at all.
