    *Couacaud 1-4 Djokovic

Couacaud gets the first point but Djokovic eases through the rest of his service game to extend his lead in this first set.

His French opponent doesn't exactly look comfortable on that ankle.

After a six-minute delay, Couacaud is back on his feet and gingerly heads over to the baseline.

A huge roar of appreciation greets his return from a Laver crowd which is Serb dominated but who want to see a contest.

    Couacaud 1-3 Djokovic*

Couacaud has had his ankle heavily strapped and he's putting his sock and trainer back on as if he's going to continue.

Yes, he is. He walks back on to court and is ready for Djokovic's serve.

    Couacaud 1-3 Djokovic*

Couacaud sounds pretty calm when the trainer arrives.

He explains he has rolled it and needs it taping up.

The self-prognosis has suddenly improved but it will be interesting to hear what the expert says.

Couacaud is in some distress and his body is shaking. Umpire has called for the trainer.

In sending his body one way, he made an effort to twist his body, and I really hope he has not done himself a real injury.

His reaction was quite extreme, as he knew he had done something quite nasty.

    Ouch.

"Can we call for the physio straight away please," says umpire Fergus Murphy.

Couacaud is in agony. He covers his head with a towel and looks to be in tears.

A concerned hush around Laver right now.

    Couacaud 1-3 Djokovic*

At the end of that game, Couacaud is really limping as he makes his way over to his chair. A physio is called on to court and he looks in serious pain.

Replays show his right ankle buckled as he tried to reach that break-winning shot from Djokovic and this doesn't look good.

    Couacaud 1-3 Djokovic*

....not this time, as the Frenchman plays Djokovic around the court before finishing with a forehand winner.

Couacaud earns himself another game point with a backhand down the line, but again can't convert it.

As the game ticks over eight minutes, Djokovic is showing signs of frustration that he hasn't wrapped this one up yet, but he does so soon enough, great exchanges between the pair ending as Djokovic plays a forehand wide of Couacaud's reach.

    *Couacaud 1-2 Djokovic

A 19-shot rally starts the fourth game, Couacaud earning the point as Djokovic fires a forehand too wide, a perplexed look on his face.

Djokovic takes the next point but then steers another forehand wide, and there are big cheers around the court as Couacaud comes into the net to bring up 40-15. He can't capitalise on his two game points however and Djokovic levels for deuce, from which Couacaud has two advantages cancelled out.

Could he be left to rue his missed opportunities? Djokovic has break point...

    *Couacaud 1-2 Djokovic

Another easy hold for Djokovic, sealed as Couacaud fails to clear the net with a backhand return from the Serb's serve.

Couacaud - a qualifier remember - is trying to reach the third round of a Grand Slam for the very first time but faces an almighty challenge here.

I feel like Djokovic is in the mood to get this match done and dusted as quickly as he can. He is looking so supremely fit - we saw that massive warm-up routine in the gym. He really is the ultimate Formula 1 car, being tweaked!

Couacaud looks like he has nice technique on both sides and will be so relieved to get on the scoreboard.

  12. 'Taping makes sense for Djokovic'published at 09:08 Greenwich Mean Time 19 January 2023

    Couacaud 1-1 Djokovic*

It makes sense for Novak Djokovic to have taping on his hamstring. Precautionary for a match that could last four hours.

He has been playing with it for a few weeks now and it is something he is budgeting for.

Djokovic played so well in the first round, and against Enzo Couacaud - he is playing someone who has very little pedigree playing against top players. The odds are stacked against the underdog.

    Couacaud 1-1 Djokovic*

Couacaud gets his first point on the board on his very first serve on the global stage that is Rod Laver Arena.

He extends his lead to 30-0 but back-to-back errors bring Djokovic back level, before he slams a forehand into the net to hand the Serb a maiden break point. Djokovic can't return the serve, however.

This time, it's a Djokovic forehand that finds the net and from there, Couacaud gets the hold.

Djokovic kicks us off with an ace before easing through his opening service game.

He wraps up a lovehold with very little threat from Couacaud.

Still lots of strapping on Novak Djokovic's left thigh as he looks to protect that hamstring injury.

As one of my Serb colleagues mentioned to me earlier, you never really know how much bother he is in physically and that his pain threshold seems to be very high.

A match against an undistinguished qualifier should not - you would think - trouble his body too much.

  17. What's on the agenda?published at 08:57 Greenwich Mean Time 19 January 2023

First up, we'll be heading over to the Rod Laver Arena where Novak Djokovic is about to take on French qualifier Enzo Couacaud.

It's the first meeting between the pair, with Couacaud playing in the main draw of the Australian Open for the first time this year. He faces quite the challenge against Djokovic, who is unbeaten in 22 matches on Melbourne Park’s top court.

Over on Margaret Court Arena, Andy Murray is second on court for his second-round clash with Australia's Thanasi Kokkinakis.

Kokkinakis thinks Murray is a "ripper bloke" - as do we all - and should the Brit win, it will be the first time he's reached the third round in Melbourne since 2017.
