The USTA matching the cheque (to back tennis development in the USA) – I think we’re going to see a lot of corporations doing the same thing. The USTA is just stepping up and doing it.

It’s just going to snowball and the things that could happen to inner city tennis, and inner cities in general, when you just keep the tennis courts instead of turning them in to something else, is just going to be gigantic for America.

Not to mention the kids that are influenced to come out and play. Just play tennis, get off the streets. It’s going to impact everywhere.

How eloquent she was when she was talking. She’s the perfect poster-child. A star is born.

    More from Coco Gauff:

"Thanks to my parents, you believed in me from the beginning, and a huge thank you to my team - thank you so much for all you have done for me, it’s been a long three months but your faith never waivered.

"I want to thank by grandparents and my brothers back home.

"I want to say thank you to the people who didn’t believe in me. A month ago I won a (WTA) 500 title and people said I would stop at that.

"Two weeks ago I won a (WTA)1000 title and people were saying that was the biggest title would get.

"Three weeks later I’m here with this trophy right now. I tried my best to carry this with grace but honestly to hose who thought you were putting water on my fire, you were really adding gas to it and now I’m burning so bright right now.

"Last but not least thank you to New York, Thank you all. This means so much."

  5. 'When Gauff speaks, you want to stand up and listen'published at 00:14 British Summer Time 10 September 2023

    Annabel Croft
Former British number one on BBC Radio 5 Sports Extra

I think she always speaks so beautifully. Every time she speaks you want to stand up and listen to it.

There is fire there and she always does play with such grace. She has such a wonderful composure on the court. You never see a lot of anger. She’s been incredibly patient I think, even though she’s done it young. We’ve known about her since she was 15 when she was at Wimbledon.

I think people expected a lot from her and she’s had to cope with enormous amounts of pressure. It was unusual to hear her have a little bit of a pop back at people but I think it also showed there is steel there in her character, which is why she’s become a great champion.

And here is your new 2023 US Open champion, Coco Gauff:

"Oh my goodness it means so much to me. I feel like I’m a little bit in shock in this moment. That French Open loss was a heartbreaker for me but I realise God puts you through tribulations and trials, and this makes this moment even more sweeter than I can imagine."

You said a little prayer - how important is your faith?

"It's been so important. I don’t pray for results. I ask that I get the strength to give it my all and whatever happens, happens.

"I'm so blessed in this life. I’m so thankful in this moment, I don’t have any words for it to be honest."

When did you have the belief you could do this?

"I just knew that if I didn’t give it my all I had no shot at wining. Aryna’s so incredible player, and congratulations on the number one ranking. Its well deserved.

"I tell my team all the time you are a really nice person behind the scenes and the competitive fire that you bring to the court makes the sport better so congratulations to you and your team for this result."

    Absolutely pandemonium outside Ashe.

"U-S-A! U-S-A! U-S-A!!" chant the hundreds of fans gathered underneath the ESPN gantry in the main plaza at Flushing Meadows.

That's because Gauff is sat in the open-air studio, ready to talk to the nation live.

"I can't hear a thing," she laughs. "I'm still in a state of shock."

"I think this is the best thing about this year."

You knew crowd was going to be on Coco’s side but you must have felt the love these two weeks?

Next up a rousing speech from the US Open champion Coco Gauff.

She thanks her family, friends and coaches. Then thanks those who doubted her for giving her the fuel to push on and of course, she thanks the New York crowds for their support.

Gauff's family are all sporting t-shirts with the slogan 'Call me Champion'.

A fantastic moment. Gauff is the first American to win the title since Sloane Stephens in 2017 and the youngest American to win it since Serena Williams in 1999.

An emotional Aryna Sabalenka is speaking at the trophy presentation and is asked what she is proud of this year, she says "I don't know".

Tears and laughter as she tries to combat the emotions.

She has won an Australian Open this year and will wake up tomorrow as world number one.

A tough night for the Belarusian but she will almost certainly be back.

    Full quotes to come.

    This is pretty stirring stuff.

One of the most emotional scenes I've witnessed at a Grand Slam final.

As the crowd erupts, a crying Gauff makes a heart sign to the fans.

Mum Candi bounces on the spot in sheer jubilance.

Everything Gauff, her parents and her family have worked for and sacrificed has been realised.

Gauff runs up to her box, hugging mum and dad as all three jump up and down in a huddle.

Gauff is sitting in her chair on the phone and looks emotional again between smiles and laughing.

I wonder who is on the end of that phone? I imagine it will be ringing off the hook for a few days to come.

I think she has just said to whoever was on the end of it that she had to go because the trophy presentation was just starting.

"Call you back, just got to pick up by US Open trophy."

    Love it.

Coco Gauff kept running all these balls down and she’d zap Aryna Sabalenka with a winner and just kept her just off balance enough that she couldn’t take advantage of Gauff’s dips.

    Gauff 2-6 6-3 6-2 Sabalenka

A fairytale ending for Gauff, who has her Grand Slam title four years after coming to the world's attention as a 15-year-old.

It's hard to believe she is still only 19. What a moment in the teenager's career. Icy cool on the court and an outpouring of emotion when she finally got the job done.

And she had to come from behind to do it. What heart and tenacity.

Gauff ascends the steps to her player box. Tears and hugs with her family, including her dad who no longer sits in the player box because he gets too nervous and instead opts to pace the perimeter of the court or sit somewhere else.

More hugs with coaches and friends and more family.

Lovely, lovely scenes on Arthur Ashe and the home crowd have got their champion.
