    Gauff 2-6 2-1 Sabalenka*

Ha! Sit down, sir. A chap in the crowd gets a telling off from the umpire as he dilly dallys looking for his seat. He's looking very confused about where he's supposed to be and what he's doing.

On the court, Sabalenka fires long for 30-30.

The quality is fluctuating constantly. It is hard to go with the flow and it has just got a bit ragged.

There was another double fault at the start of that game but Gauff recovered and it's another good hold from the 19-year-old.

She needs to start making inroads on the Sabalenka serve soon, though.

    *Gauff 2-6 1-1 Sabalenka

Whoops, Sabalenka skews one out of court then Gauff slams down an ace.

    Good serving from the American.

  5. 'Gauff not able to dictate points'published at 22:09 British Summer Time 9 September 2023

    *Gauff 2-6 1-1 Sabalenka

    Jeff Tarango
Former American tennis player on BBC Radio 5 Sports Extra

Too many body blows for Gauff. She hasn’t been able to set up and dictate a point, and that gets frustrating mentally.

  6. Sabalenka holdspublished at 22:08 British Summer Time 9 September 2023

    *Gauff 2-6 1-1 Sabalenka

A routine hold for Sabalenka in the end. No matter what, the Belarusian finds a response.

Then, there's that roar from the crowd as Gauff steps up to the baseline to serve.

    Gauff 2-6 1-0 Sabalenka*

Few nerves showing for Sabalenka but she decides nope, don't have time for nerves today and winds up a crunching forehand for 30-15.

Slammed into the net by Sabalenka and just how important could that hold prove for American Gauff?

Two break points saved, what can she come up with on this Sabalenka serve?

    *Gauff 2-6 0-0 Sabalenka

Well played. Gauff keeps her cool to save both of those break points then keeps the pressure on as Sabalenka sends a forehand long and gives Gauff advantage.

You could almost hear a pin drop when Gauff coughed up that second double fault of the game.

That's no mean feat in the noisiest tennis stadium in the world.

One of the mantras in the Gauff team has been 'Winning Ugly' - the title of the book which her coaching consultant Brad Gilbert wrote in the early 2000s.

Not for the first time at Flushing Meadows this fortnight she will have to that.

Gauff fought back from behind to win her opening match against German qualifier Laura Siegemund and Belgian 32nd seed Elise Mertens in the third round.

Now she will have to do it again...

    *Gauff 2-6 0-0 Sabalenka

Very apt music choice inside Arthur Ashe as Taylor Swift's shake it off plays and that is what Gauff is going to have to do with that first set.

She has had to come from a set down twice at this tournament already.

Not a great start as Gauff begins this second set with a double fault.

  14. 'All or nothing for Sabalenka'published at 22:00 British Summer Time 9 September 2023

There are no margins with Sabalenka.

It is all or nothing out on the court. There is nothing subtle about it.

Gauff not giving it up without a fight as she saves the first set point but then misses the forehand and that is the opening set wrapped up for Sabalenka.

It ebbed and flowed but crucially Sabalenka was able to consolidate that break in the sixth game then punish Gauff's mistakes with another break of serve.

  18. Sabalenka two set pointspublished at 21:56 British Summer Time 9 September 2023

    Gauff 2-5 Sabalenka*

Almost 40 minutes on the clock and Sabalenka is on the brink of taking this opening set as she hits a pinpoint serve then nudges Gauff's looping return just over the net.

She is one point from taking a decisive lead in this final.

Seems like this is the hottest ticket in town.

More celebrities knocking around here than a red carpet.

Actresses Diane Keaton (Annie Hall, Godfather, Father of the Bride) and Amanda Seyfried (Mean Girls, Mamma Mia) are sat in the same executive box.

Nicole Kidman has been spotted in another posh seat. So too NBA star Kevin Durant.

TMZ would be having a field day here.
