British ice dancers Penny Coomes and Nick Buckland, who won bronze at the European Championships, finished down in seventh out of 10 couples after the short programme of the figure skating team event.

"It's the technical score where we lost marks and we don't really know what the issues are yet," said Buckland, who will have another chance with Coomes in the individual event. "We'll go away and look at the marks but we can see what we've done wrong now and fix them for the individual."

"Getting Britain into the top five and keeping them in this team event is probably an impossible task for Northern Ireland's Jenna McCorkell at this point, but this is an excellent chance for her to rehearse for her individual event later in the Games. McCorkell fell at Vancouver 2010 and deeply disappointed herself - the same happened at last month's Euros, so a clean skate here is key for her confidence."

  3. Coming up - Ski Jumpingpublished at 16:24 Greenwich Mean Time 8 February 2014

Our first taste of ski jumping is almost upon us, with the men's individual normal hill qualifying due to start at 16:30 GMT.

Switzerland's Simon Ammann, 32, is chasing a historic fifth gold medal in the event and has form in the event, having won the Olympic title in Salt Lake City in 2002 and in Vancouver in 2010.

He's already qualified for the first round, though, along with nine others who make up the top 10 in the World Cup standings. They will be joined by the best 40 from 51 competitors in qualifying.

Before leaving for Sochi, Austrian slalom skier Marlies Schild told BBC Sportsworld what her team-mates who are already in Russia have been telling her.

"The accommodation is OK but they tell me to bring my own bed sheets," she said.

"The start list for the men's downhill has been published and all eyes are on Bode Miller and Aksel Lund Svindal. The American is bib 15 and the big Norwegian 18. There will be 50 racers heading to the start gate but Miller has been vocal in his views on the Rosa Khutor course, which he says is treacherous and "can kill you". Watch it live on the BBC from 07:00 GMT on Sunday."

  6. Biathlonpublished at 16:09 Greenwich Mean Time 8 February 2014

For those of you wondering how Britain's Lee Jackson got on in the men's 10km sprint, he finished 67th. That means he won't be able to contest the men's pursuit - which only permits the top 60 in today's race to enter. Jackon still has the men's individual 20km to go, though.

  7. Biathlonpublished at 16:03 Greenwich Mean Time 8 February 2014

Ole Einar Bjoerndalen lets out a "Yeaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah" as he climbs onto the top step of the podium after winning the men's 10Km sprint, a title he has won three times now. The 40-year-old Norwegian has not won an individual world title for five years. There's no medals dished out, though - just a bunch of flowers, which he promptly throws into the crowd. The gold medal - which he's really after - will come later.

Over at the Ice Cube Curling Centre, Team GB's men have had their first practice session on the ice. Skip David Murdoch was not feeling 100% and didn't do much sliding, opting to observe and direct practice more than slide himself. He did indicate afterwards he should be fine, but alternate Tom Brewster, who skipped the team to world silver in 2011 and 2012 said: "I'll do as much as I can for the team and be ready if called upon. We've played with each other as a five-man rotation team for the last two seasons, so (if I were needed) it would pretty much be seamless."

"A sigh of relief for the US as Meryl Davis and Charlie White, arguably the most reliable deliverers of figure skating excellence on the world circuit, haul the team up from seventh to third with that ice dance win, above the top-five cut-off point. GB lurk in ninth. One act to go, the women's short programme, before the axe falls. Jenna McCorkell up for GB around 16:30 GMT."

Not surprisingly, the later starters in the men's luge have failed to trouble the leader Albert Demchenko from Russia as the first run comes to a close for the 39 competitors.

Tonga's Bruno Banani is down in 34th place - one place ahead of India's Shiva Keshavan, who is competing under the Olympic flag as an independent.

The second of the four runs gets underway at 16:40 with Germany's Felix Loch and Armin Zoeggeler of Italy hoping to challenge Demchenko.

"Down to the business end of the ice dance in team figure skating, where we're going to get a dress rehearsal for Canada (Olympic champions) versus the US (world champions), which is set to be a huge showdown in the main ice dance contest later in these Games.

"Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir (Canada) train alongside Meryl Davis and Charlie White (US) and even if they didn't, the power of YouTube means gone are the days when any figure skater didn't know what the oppo had planned. Both couples are known, spectacular quantities.

"Penny Coomes and Nick Buckland are a little disappointed by their technical score and will go back and review the breakdown a little later on. That said, they're happy to be out here after Buckland's heart scare and feel as though they did themselves justice as European bronze medallists."

Bjoerndalen is 40 years old so this would be a phenomenal achievement. He already has six golds, four silvers and one bronze in his rucksack, alongside his rifle. If he finishes in the top three, which is looking increasingly likely, he will equal his compatriot Bjoern Daehlie's record tally of 12 Winter Olympic medals. And there's just a hint of a smile appearing on his face now...

Tonga are making their Winter Olympic debut in Sochi and 26-year-old Bruno Banani is the man who is creating history in the men's luge.

Banani, who changed his name from Fuahea Semi, responded to a call from Princess Salote Mafile'o Pilolevu Tuita, who was looking for an athlete to represent the nation at the Games.

At the time, he was a computer science student and a member of the Tongan military, and had never sat on a luge before. He moved to Germany in 2009, where he began training with the German national squad and after missing the Vancouver Games, the man who carried the flag at last night's opening ceremony will be in action later this afternoon in the first run.
