  4. What is biathlon?published at 14:24 Greenwich Mean Time 8 February 2014

Biathlon is the sweatiest discipline at the Winter Olympics. Males athletes typically produce 2.3 litres (four pints) of perspiration in the 20km individual event, and burn over 3,000 calories per race.

Today, though, the focus is on the men's 10km sprint. As Rob mentioned below, there will be one prone and one standing shoot. That means biathletes must fire at five targets from 50m with a 5.6mm caliber rifle.

Target diameters are 11.5cm - roughly the size of a shot put - for shots fired when standing and just 4.5cm - equivalent to the size of a golf ball - from prone. For each missed target, they biathlete must complete a 150m penalty loop immediately after leaving the firing range.

"Feverish anticipation is building for the battle between World Cup leader Martin Fourcade of France, Swedish world champion Emil Hegle Svendsen and Norwegian great Ole Einar Bjoerndalen, who is hoping to add to his Olympic tally of 11 medals.

"Bjoerndalen would match the 12 medals won by countryman and retired cross-country skier Bjorn Daehlie and equal the record for the most medals by any Winter Olympic athlete.

"The competition features three loops of 3.3km on skis with one prone and one standing shooting round."

Jorrit Bergsma crosses the line with the second quickest time, 5.90 seconds adrift of Sven Kramer's leading time. Sverre Lunde Pedersen of Norway has a decent run, too, slotting into third and pushing Russian Denis Yuskov out of the medals.

  17. Speed Skatingpublished at 13:48 Greenwich Mean Time 8 February 2014

It's all gone wrong for Jorrit Bergsma who is paying the price for going off too quickly. He's now nearly a second and a half down on his countryman with three laps to go. However, if he digs deep, he should be able to stay second, with a 8.45-second gap between lead Sven Kramer and second placed Denis Yuskov.
