Britain's Lee Jackson has completed his course in 27.07 seconds to lie in 39th place.

Jackson took up biathlon in 1998 while serving for the Army's 2nd Yorkshire Regiment, which he joined as a 16-year-old the previous year.

Jackson took a liking to the sport and within 18 months found himself competing at the Junior World Championships. He missed out on selection for the Turin Games in 2006 but was chosen as Britain's only male biathlete for Vancouver where he placed 55th in the 10km sprint, 56th in the 12.5km pursuit and 66th in the 20km individual event.

Bjoerndalen moves one step closer to that record-equalling 12th medal as France's World Cup leader Martin Fourcade can only manage fourth place, 12.4 seconds adrift of the Norweigan.

    Robin Cousins
1980 Olympic figure skating champion on BBC TV

"I thought Coomes and Buckland were terrific. It was nicely clean, elegant and smooth. Nice timing through the twizzels. I'm quite surprised that they didn't score so highly on the technical part."

  5. Figure Skatingpublished at 15:14 Greenwich Mean Time 8 February 2014

Lovely stuff from British pair Penny Coomes and Nicholas Buckland as they go second in the early stages of the team ice dance at the Iceberg Skating Palace. Five of the 10 pairs have been out so far.

Ole Einar Bjoerndalen lunges for the line to snatch the lead in the men's 10km sprint by 1.3 seconds from Dominik Landertinger of Austria. His big rival and fellow Norweigan Emil Hegle Svendsen, the reigning world champion, will not be among the medals as he comes in 29 seconds behind in fifth.

Bjoerndalen's dreams of a record-equalling 12th medal suffer a major blow as he misses the target with one of his shots to incur a 20-second penalty. Some of the early birds are starting to complete the course, with Czech athlete Ondrej Moravec currently setting the pace with a time of 24:48.1 minutes

  11. Lugepublished at 14:57 Greenwich Mean Time 8 February 2014

Russian veteran Albert Demchenko is setting the pace as the first run in the men's luge continues.

The 42-year-old, who is competing in his seventh Games, clocked 52.170 seconds in his run down the course at the Sanki Sliding Centre, 0.015secs ahead of German defending champion Felix Loch with Italian Armin Zoeggeler third.

You can watch the remainder of the run on the BBC Sport website and the second run starts at 16:40 GMT.

"Russia lead after Evgeni Plushenko's stunning comeback on Thursday and they'll look to keep that momentum tonight, but Canada are hot on their heels and have one of the world's best ice dance teams in Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir. World ice dance champions Meryl Davis and Charlie White have a big task ahead - the US are seventh and again, must find a way into the top five to stay alive in the contest."

  13. Biathlonpublished at 14:55 Greenwich Mean Time 8 February 2014

There's a huge roar as Russia's Evgeny Ustyugov slots home all of his shots in the standing phase. But the favourite Ole Einar Bjoerndalen from Norway still leads on the split times. Several big guns (so to speak) still to start their runs though.

Sochi organisers were caught short yesterday, when the 2.5km penalty loop at the Laura Olympic biathlon venue was changed slightly on Friday after the Norwegian team found it was too short.

"We added 40 metres per loop," said Max Cobb, the sport's technical delegate at the Sochi Games.

On the World Cup events, International Biathlon Union officials check the course four days before an event but Olympic events are under the International Olympic Committe's (IOC) jurisdiction.

That's me done for a bit. I'll leave you in the very capable hands of Sam Sheringham for the conclusion of the men's biathlon 10km sprint where a gold medal will be handed out. We'll also have updates from the figure skating, luge and ice hockey.

    Rob Hodgetts
BBC Sport at the Laura biathlon centre in Sochi

"A glorious evening as the sun slowly sinks behind the mountains across the valley from the Laura biathlon centre. The stage is set for the men's 10km sprint, with the athletes limbering up on the undulating track that disappears into the forest in front of the stands.

"The shooting range, framed by huge Olympic rings, is in front of the banked seating on the course side of the huge shining structure for media and officaldom, like the vast edifices you get in an Formula 1 paddock. "

The men's biathlon 10km sprint is under way, with Norway's Ole Einar Bjoerndalen kicking off his campaign. Biathletes go off at 30 second intervals, with the quickest time overall taking the gold medal. Bjoerndalen is looking for a record-equalling 12th Winter Olympic medal. The favourite Emil Hegle Svendsen, the silver medallist four years ago in Vancouver, has just left the starting gates, too.

  18. Figure Skatingpublished at 14:38 Greenwich Mean Time 8 February 2014

    Ollie Williams
    BBC Sport in Sochi

"Four months ago, Nick Buckland was having heart surgery to cure a condition where his heart would reach 270 beats per minute - often during big competitions like this.

"That he recovered quickly enough to be here tonight alongside ice dance partner Penny Coomes, competing in the new Olympic team event for GB, is almost a miracle.

And that is what Britain will need to make it through to the next stage of this event. Coomes and Buckland, then Jenna McCorkell in the women's event, must somehow elevate Britain from 10th to fifth if they are to stay in the event past the cut-off after the short programmes, midway through today's schedule."

  19. Lugepublished at 14:37 Greenwich Mean Time 8 February 2014

Action is underway at the Sanki Sliding Centre with Italian Dominik Fischnaller the first man out in run one of the men's singles in the men's luge.

There are 38 men competing - among the favourites is defending champion Felix Loch of Germany who is out 10th.

India's Shiva Keshavan, competing under the Olympic flag as an independent, will also be in action which means it's a good excuse to link to this video where he manages to get back on his sled seamlessly after coming off it during a training session earlier this week.

It's all gone wrong for Hedvig Wessel. The Norweigan lands on her back as she tries a back flip off the second jump. Bravely she gets up and completes the run, but that's her hopes of reaching the final over.
