"It's so difficult in this pipe. I know Dom Harington and his technique is better than that. This pipe is really difficult to ride and you can see that when someone like Dom is having so much trouble with the tricks that he can normally do."

Ben Kilner mentions that he was planning ton attempting a double cork, which describes any trick that involves spinning upside down twice. (Yes, the dictionary is back in my possession.)

Groans from the British contingent as Ben Kilner hits the deck early on in his second snowboard halfpipe qualification run. He gets up immediately but holds his head in his hands as his Olympic hopes fade.

"The snow is soft and it's hard, our edges are sinking in," he says. "I've had good days and bad days and this was a bad day. On the second run I was going to do a double cork on my third hit but I didn't get there. I felt I was coming away from the wall and landed too heavy and couldn't get back."

If you don't know your Rodeos from your McTwists then worry not, you won't be judged, although these Olympics have been four years in the making...

It's simple stuff, really. A Rodeo is an upside down backside spin which involves turning through at least 540 degrees. A McTwist? I'll have to get back to you... someone's stolen my snowboard dictionary... Stand by.

Britain's Ben Kilner had a disastrous second run and was awarded a 16.25 for his effort. A first run score of 43.50 was the best Kilner could manage but he won't qualify with that.

  7. Snowboardingpublished at 11:14 Greenwich Mean Time 11 February 2014

    Ed Leigh
    BBC Sport snowboarding commentator

"We are seeing some of the biggest names in the business going out because of the condition of the pipe. As it's too soft, they cannot do the runs they should be able to do in their sleep, and the runs they have spent four years practising."

Avumu Hirano was only 14 when he finished second behind Shaun White at the 2013 X Games and his amplitude is widely regarded to be second only to White himself. Hirano currently tops halfpipe qualifying in the first heat with a 92.25 score and that should be enough to ease the Japanese through.

  10. Curlingpublished at 11:07 Greenwich Mean Time 11 February 2014

Curling waits for no man and the action is continuing at the Ice Cube Curling Centre where Great Britain's men are up against Germany. Midway through the fourth end, Germany are leading 2-1 - but there is still plenty of time left in that one.

For those of you who don't remember (and you are forgiven by the way), GB won their opening match against Russia on Monday before losing later on to Sweden.

You can watch the climax of the curling live on the BBC Sport website.

By the way, Andrew Musgrave's sister, Posy Musgrave, failed to qualify for the quarter-finals of the women's sprint freestyle. The Brit crossed the line in 42nd place after completing the distance in 2:43.06.

Tola Onanuga:, external Snowboard halfpipe is very entertaining to watch but it looks pretty damn brutal.

Jo Malley:, external The halfpipe seems a real mess, shame the organisers couldn't do it properly. Hope nobody is going to get injured.

Kath Faulkner:, external Pipe's looking awful & the riders don't seem happy with it at all. Olympic halfpipe should be the pinnacle, this won't be.

    Rob Walker
    BBC Sport commentator

"Andrew Musgrave would have been disappointed if he hadn't made it. It is a just reward for how he has immersed himself into the sport. He goes into the quarter-finals under no pressure. It is the best performance ever by a British cross country skier and there could be better to come later today."

Andrew Musgrave qualifies for the quarter-finals of the men's sprint freestyle. The Briton's time of 3:37.75 saw him finish 27th in an event where the top 30 qualify, so you could say he timed it well.

The majority of us will never know what it feels like to fall asleep while clutching an Olympic medal so we'll just have to trust Canadian skater Eric Radford, silver medallist in the team figure staking, who posted on Twitter:, external "I'm gonna have sweet dreams tonight."

Not surprisingly, Lizzy Yarnold is delighted with her training performances so far in skeleton, having been quickest in three out of four runs. "It was good fun out there today," Yarnold said. "We have just two more runs in training left so each one has to be a real experiment, I have to try as many lines as I can so that I pick the best ones for race day."

Shelley Rudman, silver medallist in Turin in 2006, said she was beginning to find her rhythm. "Things that I was struggling with yesterday, I've managed to correct today, so that's positive. It's coming together and I'm really enjoying my time out here." They have two more training runs on Wednesday, ahead of the event which starts on Thursday and concludes on Friday.

  18. Snowboardingpublished at 10:40 Greenwich Mean Time 11 February 2014

    Ed Leigh

"Dom Harington knows he can do better. At 29 years old he has devoted his whole snowboarding career to get to the Winter Olympics. He has everything to do in his second run."

  19. Snowboardingpublished at 10:39 Greenwich Mean Time 11 February 2014

The halfpipe is not in a good condition, so they say, because of the balmy conditions in Sochi. Britain's Dominic Harington scores 12.75 on his first qualifying run in his first heat and that's only good enough for 15th. He'll plummet further down the rankings.
