And that, I think, is that. Stay tuned to the Red Button for highlights throughout the evening, then get up very early for Britain's women's curlers.

After that, get ready for a day of potential British success. Goodnight.

"I'm excited to be a part of this team, it's something I will cherish forever. I want to get out there and give my absolute all, whether it's battling myself or everyone else in the field."

The words of Britain's James Woods, last year's world number one in ski slopestyle, ahead of Thursday's competition at the Rosa Khutor Extreme Park.

Tomorrow? It's a day for British excitement. As always, the curlers are in action, but Team GB have imminent medal hopes in the shape of James Woods and Elise Christie.

Woods goes in the men's snowboard slopestyle, with Christie lining-up in the women's short-track 500m speed skating. Elsewhere, skeleton prospects Lizzy Yranold and Shelley Rudman begin their campaigns.

    All happening.

There was one more gold medal won today - Germany's Eric Frenzel taking the Nordic combined title. Added to that doubles luge success, Germany now head the medals table with six golds, ahead of Norway, Canada and the Netherlands, who all have four.

    Robin Cousins
1980 Olympic figure skating champion on BBC TV

"A thrilling pairs final, it was brewing for a couple of days but the Russians have been skating brilliantly and didn't let anyone down tonight.

"Tomorrow, the men's championship begins and there will be eight of them fighting for a medal/podium place. I will be happy to be watching it."

If the Dutch are fastest on the ice, then the Russians are perhaps the most graceful. In the pairs final, Tatiana Volosozha and Maxim Trankov gave Russia a second figure skating medal of the Games. All in all, Russia have 13 of the last 14 pairs titles. Dominance.

Shani Davis on Today at the Games: "I didn't have speed n the first 600m of the race, compared to the people behind me.

"I am a professional, I couldn't care less about pressure. I have the medals and the most important thing to me is the performance. I just wasn't able to do it today."

Not with an orange wall of Dutch speed-skating dominance in front of him. The Netherlands had already won three speed skating golds in Sochi, and they were destined to add another. Stefan Groothuis gave the Netherlands yet more success, with Davis way down in eighth place.

In speed skating, we were after a piece of Winter Olympic history. No athlete has won three consecutive golds in the same event. Was American Shani Davis about to do just that in the men's 1000m?

Phil Thompson, external: Wife's just asked "when is the downhill curling on?...you know the downhill curling with people?" She meant skeleton.

David Greg Jones, external: A shared gold medal in skiing? It should be sorted by a snowball fight - first to the deck gets silver.

Richard K Hornsey, external: When watching Luge, it helps if you imagine they've just fallen out of the back of an ambulance, rather like 007 in Moonraker.

Yep, Tobias Wendl and Tobias Arlt ensured Germany added further success to the gold they won in the individual men's and women's events. Surely they can't be stopped in Thursday's relay?

Questions were almost too plentiful. How do you begin double luging? Is it comfortable? Can the man on the bottom see anything? What was in no doubt, though, was continued German dominance.

  13. Lugepublished at 19:42 Greenwich Mean Time 12 February 2014

If the curling was sedate, then the doubles luge provided us with perhaps the most bizarre event of the whole Games. Two men, one sled, 1300m at speeds of 85mph.

  14. Curlingpublished at 19:41 Greenwich Mean Time 12 February 2014

For the men, it was a more sedate, straightforward win over Switzerland. Skip Dave Murdoch had to hold his nerve with the final stone, sealing a 4-2 win, a third victory from four.

That's two wins and two defeats for Britain, but with five group games still to go, there's plenty of opportunities to get into the semi-finals.

Eve Muirhead's ladies were involved in a see-saw, tension-filled battle with 2010 runners-up Canada. Two stones behind in the last end, Britain could have forced an extra end. Skip Muirhead, though, went for glory. Instead of settling for the overtime, she wanted it all, and got nothing. A 9-6 defeat.

So, after Chemmy Alcott, British interest in Sochi was confined to the curlers. Both the men and women were in action, with mixed results and mixed levels of drama.
