"With a new breed of halfpipe coming through, it is possibly the last time we see these three on the podium. The fairytale run for Kaitlyn Farrington and she takes gold for the first time at a halfpipe event, and it happens to be the Olympics.

"The men's may have lost out but it is business as usual for the women's with two Americans, including Kelly Clark, on the podium."

It wasn't enough from Kelly Clark. Kaitlyn Farrington, a relatively unknown newcomer, wins gold in the women's snowboard halfpipe. Clark makes it a United States one-three, with Australia's defending champion Torah Bright having to settle for silver.

Here comes Clark...just holding on. An iffy run, even though it included a huge frontside 1080. Kaitlyn Farrington could be about to win gold.

"I am not sure I agree with that score for Torah Bright. It was a much clearer run and more technical than Kate Farrington."

91.50! A quarter of a point short of Kaitlyn Farrington. Bright still has a smile that could melt hearts, but she will not be defending her title. Now, only Kelly Clark can deny her fellow American Farrington.

Wonderful from Bright. Twist...frontside five...alley oop...she has pulled it all out. A clean run that will surely be good enough for a medal - but what colour?

Two riders left, one of which is the reigning and defending champion, Torah Bright. Here comes the Aussie. Can she replicate her run of four years' ago in Vancouver?

Teter has fallen! She cannot beat Kaitlyn Farrington and must wait to see if she is beaten for silver. She began with height, but overrotated on a grab and ended up sitting in the snow.

"Somebody's woken the Czech Republic and now we have some sort of contest. Two goals in the space of a few minutes, the second bundled past Henrik Lundqvist by 41-year-old NHL superstar Jaromir Jagr.

"Sweden are suddenly on the back foot and 'only' 4-2 up. This game looked lifeless not long ago, such a change in Czech confidence and creative spark."

"Peng and Zhang are a lovely couple and there is glorious quality in one so young at 16-years-old. Maybe she was thinking, "my goodness, I am at the Olympics." It was as tough warm-up for her and he was doing his best with her. She just needs the experience."

Farrington stays on course for gold. France's Sophie Rodriguez pulled off a spectacular run, but a lack of execution has the judges marking her for fifth place. Six boarders remain.

We have a new leader, one that can't believe her run was good enough to take top spot. America's Kaitlyn Farrington takes over at the head of the leaderboard from Hannah Teter. But will she be there for long...

"Ohhh it's a drubbin'. Erik Karlsson again, from range, on the power play. Sweden 4-0 up and the Czech Republic are just not in the game, it could be seven or eight.

"The roof of the Bolshoy Ice Dome lights up to show hockey score and animations take place when goals are scored."

Early in this second run, plenty of boarder are ending up sitting in the snow. Japan's Rana Okada has at least got herself into third, but it's still all up for grabs.

UK Sport's director of performance, Simon Timson, believes Britain's Winter Olympians are shedding a "plucky losers" mentality and are starting to expect to win medals.

Timson also praised Britain's Lizzy Yarnold and Shelley Rudman - who both compete in skeleton on Thursday - as the "greatest natural born racers" he'd ever worked with believing it will take "great athletes" to deny them places on the podium.

"British Olympic Winter sport is definitely having higher and higher expectations of itself," he told BBC Sport.

"Less than a minute gone in the second period and Sweden are three up. Henrik Zetterberg with maybe the faintest of touches from Alexander Steen in front of the net. Zetterberg given the goal inside the arena.

"Again, the Czech Republic left their goaltender to fend for himself. The three-goal lead is testament to Sweden's fine start but also an indictment of the Czech Republic's defence.

"Now the Czech Republic switch their goalie, Alexander Salak coming in. Not convinced that was the issue."

I think the halfpipe is perhaps the most theatrical arena of the entire Games. As each rider prepares to set off, they stand in front of a giant video screen that plays an introductory video - a bit like pro wrestling. They then set off into the Colosseum, down the snowy slope and into the blank canvas of the halfpipe. From there, it could be glory or disaster.

Here goes Bright...twist...huge air...then a lack of control. She manages to keep upright to the end of the run, but it won't be good enough to dislodge America's Hannah Teter from top spot. She's way down in eighth.
