Yep, Switzerland's Dominique Gisin and Slovenia's Tina Maze became the first athletes in Winter Olympic history to share a gold medal. They were both clocked at one minute, 41.47 seconds - they could not be separated, so both took gold. With two winners, no silver was awarded, leaving Swiss Lara Gut to take bronze.

There was to be no fairytale for Alcott, though - she would later say how pleased she was to claim 19th in her fourth Games. No fairytales, but a piece of history...

Very early this morning saw British interest in the women's downhill skiing. Chemmy Alcott, the bionic woman who has broken more than 40 bones in her body, recovered from a latest broken leg to take her place. What an effort.

BBC Sport snowboarding and freestyle skiing commentator

"There was only a quarter of a point that separated them. Kaitlyn Farrington's jumps weren't that clean or high. Torah Bright's first hits were huge, it was such a technical run. Bright may have been hard done by."

  5. Snowboardingpublished at 19:22 Greenwich Mean Time 12 February 2014

Olympic champion Kaitlyn Farrington on Today at the Games: "I had the run that I wanted to do and the first run I landed it and needed to be clean in the second.

"I think I got the nerves out during qualifiers, I was so nervous then. I felt confident going into the final."

All the action in Sochi is done for the day with the conclusion of two men's ice hockey games. Switzerland have beaten Latvia 1-0, while Sweden were 4-2 victors over Czech Republic.

"The medal ceremony is over for tonight as indeed is the accompanying concert but the entertainment continues on the Olympic Park with the fountain display around the flame in time to some rousing Russian classical music. Impressive."

Both Clark and Bright faltered on their first run and had to go big on the second. They both improved, but not enough to beat unknown American Kaitlyn Farrington. Bright had to settle for silver, Clark bronze, with 2006 champion Hannah Teter pushed down to fourth.

The battle seemed to be between Australian defending champion Torah Bright and 2002 champion Kelly Clark of the United States. Was the script followed? Not on your life. As riders came and went, plenty sitting in the snow, we were in for a shock.

  10. Snowboarding halfpipepublished at 19:05 Greenwich Mean Time 12 February 2014

Six gold medals were won in a, bizarrely, baking hot Sochi today. Yesterday, the biggest drama came in the men's halfpipe, where king of snowboarding Shaun White was beaten. Could the women dish up similar thrills?

Right then, time for Today at the Games. Head to BBC Two for all the highlights from day five and that haunting opener. "I am the dreadful menace". Chilling.

Before Today at the Games (TATG?) starts, I've got time to point out one of my favourite videos of this or any other Olympics, world championships or North Staffordshire oatcake eating jamberoo.

Before the opening ceremony, the Russian Interior Ministry sang Daft Punk's 'Get Lucky'. Has to be seen to be believed.

Gold for the hosts as Tatiana Volosozha and Maxim Trankov give Russia a second skating gold of the Games after Sunday's success in the team event. Ksenia Stolbova and Fedor Klimov make it a Russian one-two, with Germans Savchenko and Szolkowy having to settle for bronze.

  16. Figure Skatingpublished at 18:41 Greenwich Mean Time 12 February 2014

German pair Aliona Savchenko and Robin Szolkowy, second after the short programme, have each taken a tumble in the long. How costly will those mistakes be? The gold has gone, but what about another medal?

JK, external: Women's halfpipe was fantastic. Such amazing skill. So much respect for the legend that is Torah Bright - the female Shaun White!

Colin Isaac, external: Great conclusion to the women's half pipe, but personally I thought that Torah Bright did the best run for me.

James Rowe, external: Torah Bright thoroughly deserved the silver medal, if not gold! Had a beautiful run, coupled with a great story up to this event

Each event comprises two segments: a short routine, in which skaters must perform set technical elements, and a longer, higher-scoring routine which allows more creative licence.

A panel of nine judges score on choreography and technical proficiency.

So, with the halfpipe medals decided, there is just one more gold to be handed out today. It comes in figure skating, where the pairs free final is close to a conclusion in the Iceberg Skating Palace.

    Ollie Williams
BBC Sport at the Bolshoy Ice Dome in Sochi

"Two periods down and Sweden have a 4-2 lead that's decidedly more precarious than I'd been expecting after the first period. The Czech Republic are back in this in a big way, and Henrik Lundqvist made a big save at the end of the second to stop them drawing within one goal."
