    Ski jumping

Tonight, I shall mostly be watching men in baggy suits made of ironing board covers launch themselves off the side of a mountain, fly through the air in a manner acceptable to some other men sitting in a big tower, and land as far away as possible, in as stylish a fashion as they can muster. It's called ski jumping, and it's the men's large hill competition at the oil refinery…sorry, RusSki Gorki Jumping Centre. The first round starts at 17:30 GMT. Come fly with me.

  3. Curlingpublished at 16:16 Greenwich Mean Time 15 February 2014

Great Britain skip Eve Muirhead looks very stern as she watches Switzerland throw down their final stone of the fifth end. It has not been the best of starts for the British women, but Muirhead takes a one with her last effort to reduce the deficit to 3-2 at the halfway stage.

Russian officials say Olympic skicross racer Maria Komissarova has undergone a successful six-hour operation on her broken and dislocated spine following a training accident.

Mikhail Verzeba, a spokesman for the Russian freestyle ski federation, says Komissarova fractured the 12th dorsal vertebrae in her lower-middle back and had emergency surgery Saturday. Komissarova was brought to a hospital near the Rosa Khutor Extreme Park and the decision was made to operate there instead of transporting her down the mountain.

The 23-year-old Komissarova was practicing for next Friday's contest on a sunny morning on the 1,200-meter course, which has nine banked turns and 25 jumps.

"So with one run to go home favourite Alexander Tretiakov holds a commanding 0.54 second advantage over Latvia's Martins Dukurs and huge 2.26 second lead over USA's John Daly in third.

"Tretiakov won bronze in Vancouver four years ago and a cynic may say that all that extra ice-time the Russians have had has helped his cause somewhat.

"Only top 20 of 27-strong field are through to the fourth and final run, but Great Britain's Dom Parsons and Kristan Bromley are safe in ninth and 10th respectively."

BBC Sport curling commentator Steve Cram said: "Great Britain need to up their game. It has been a little bit inconsistent from both teams so far."

"Yarnold said she was not sure how she will react when she finally receives the medal. And in a perfect bit of symmetry, it will be IOC vice-president Sir Craig Reedie, who presented Amy Williams with her gold four years ago, who has the honour again."
