With three laps to go, Elise Christie makes her move off the final bend, injecting a huge burst of acceleration to pass all three skaters in front of her to take the lead. It's like she hit a turbo button. The Briton then opens up a lead of half a lap before easing across the line in a time of 1:30.588, 2.7 seconds clear of the field.

    Wilf O’Reilly
Former Olympic short track speed skater on BBC TV

"It is enormously comforting that everyone is routing for Elise Christie, including the team and everyone in the UK. It is important she stays focused, relaxed and stays in the zone.

"It is such an exciting sport and mayhem when the arena is packed.

"Personally, there is a psychological warfare that goes on in the changing room. Great Britain won't be in there on their own - there will be three or four other teams too. The eyeballing with the other competitors won't happen today, but I am sure it will have happened in the past."

"These are very difficult conditions. The skiers need to feel the snow under their feet and, with the fog, we are unable to see anything at all."

The skiers out on the course now are really at a disadvantage as a mist has descended. You can hardly see the skiers negotiate their way round the gates in the top section.

    Ollie Williams
BBC Sport at the Iceberg Skating Palace in Sochi

"So, here we are at pandemonium HQ. The short-track board of chaos will take queries all morning on rules/regs/ridiculousness.

"We have yet to see a short-track red card here: 'Disqualified immediately and excluded from the Winter Olympics.' That's some card.

"To get a red card, you have to be 'intentionally dangerous or grossly negligent' or get two yellows (for 'unsafe, harmful or hazardous')."

Britain's Elise Christie has been penalised twice in Sochi. First she was denied silver in the 500m following a collision early in the race. Secondly, she was forced out of the 1500m heats after being deemed not to have crossed the official line marked in the ice.
