    Great Britain skip David Murdoch on Today at the Games: "It just didn't happen today. We didn't get off to a good start and that gave them confidence.

    "It's been an incredible few years. I'm really proud of the effort that has been put in. Today was a tough day, but there are plenty of good days."

    Not a chance. The match wouldn't even run the full 10 ends. Hands were shaken after the eighth, Britain defeated 9-3. Disappointment, but the silver medal is there to be celebrated. With that, Team GB matched their best-ever Olympic haul of four medals.

    Canada's Olympic-winning curling team thanked British coach Soren Gran for firing them up with his criticism of their "aggressive style" ahead of the gold-medal match.

    Canada thrashed Britain 9-3 to claim a third successive gold medal and said that the comments from the Swede had given them extra motivation.

    "I was a little shocked. I don't know what his thinking was in saying that publicly before the final," said Canadian skip Brad Jacobs. "I really think that was a big mistake on his part. I really believe in karma and I think that's what you maybe saw out there."

    Two-time Olympic champion Evi Sachenbacher-Stehle and Italian bobsleigh brakeman William Frullani have been sent home from Sochi 2014 after failing drugs tests. Both tested positive for methylhexanamine with A and B samples.

    Biathlete Sachenbacher-Stehle, who won gold in 2002 and 2010, finished fourth in two events this year.

    The 33-year-old, who won gold in the team sprint in the last Olympics in Vancouver and in the 4x5km in Salt Lake City, said: "This is the worst nightmare you could imagine. I can't explain how the doping test could be positive."

    Police officer Frullani will be replaced in Saturday's four-man event by Samuele Romanini. The 34-year-old Frullani is a former international decathlete, who competed at the 2006 European Championships.

    Performance director of GB short track speed skating Stuart Horsepool on BBC Two: "I'm pretty disappointed. You have to respect the referees' decision but I don't agree with it. I'm heartbroken.

    "Maybe the rule needs to be made more clear in the future. Ultimately we came here with many opportunities.

    "I'm disappointed, frustrated and probably quite angry with the referee. We changed her tactics. We gave here experience of skating from the middle and back. Sport doesn't have to be fair and if it was, we'd be celebrating one, two or three medals."
