"Elise Christie was protecting her position before the collision happened. That might be why she has been penalised. She was not at fault for the fall, but it may because of the earlier incident. Even so, it would be extremely harsh."

More from Elise Christie: "I'm devastated as I've spent so much time training. I hadn't even given everything yet as I was waiting for the final.

"I don't understand how you can penalise two people. They should try and have the same referee all year for consistency.

"I'm really trying to hold myself together right now."

Elise Christie on BBC Two: "I thought I'd save my energy for the last few laps. I saw they went wide so I went inside, I pulled tight the next corner. But, honest to God, I'm pretty sure she hit me from behind.

"I got disqualified today for the opposite reason to what I got disqualified for in the 500m. Every single member of Team GB is astonished."

Credit to Elise Christie, she's holding it together pretty well. I'd be a quivering wreck.

  5. Short Track Speed Skatingpublished at 18:16 Greenwich Mean Time 21 February 2014

Christie says she is "very heartbroken" and "didn't think in 100 years she would be penalised". Right decision or not, you can't help but feel for her. Three times she has been penalised in a Games she has been training so long for.

Elise Christie is speaking on BBC Two. She must be pretty fed up of answering questions on controversial decisions.

  7. Short Track Speed Skatingpublished at 18:11 Greenwich Mean Time 21 February 2014

Britain's Jon Eley after finishing seventh in the men's 500m: "I have come a long way this season. I struggled at the start and I'm delighted to finish on a high at these Olympics.

"I didn't see Elise Christie's race as I was preparing for my B final, but it's upsetting for the team but this will make her a lot stronger. She has had some unlucky times but she is a great racer and I think she will come back in four years time and win the gold medal."

Joshua Godfrey:, external I can't believe Team GB were not allowed to appeal that decision. Elise was clearly impeded.

Jeremy Stewart:, external The Olympic ethos of a lack of official explanation for penalties is simply appalling. Sympathy in abundance to brilliant Elise.

Lee Clark:, external Disgraceful decision. Robbed of a medal. She was obviously the strongest out there.

  9. Gold Medalpublished at 18:07 Greenwich Mean Time 21 February 2014

Gold for Seung-hi Park, who leads home a South Korea 1-3. China's Kexin Fan got in between the Koreans ahead of Suk Hee Shim. A pretty unremarkable final, to be honest. Short-track has used all its drama on Elise Christie.

Now then, Sam and I have potentially made ourselves unpopular for saying we could understand why Elise Christie was penalised. Well, stick our man Ollie Williams in the firing line too. We think Christie was penalised for a push on Jianrou Li before both went down. Ollie, in Sochi, agrees that may be the case. Either way, the women's 1,000m final, without Christie, is beginning now.

Whilst An was winning that gold medal, Canada were taking the lead against the US in the men's ice hockey semis. Jamie Benn was the man to find the net, putting Canada on course for an ice hockey double over the States, which would put President Obama two crates of beer out of pocket.

That's a seventh Olympic medal for An, who has caused wild celebrations in Sochi with that success. China's Dajing Wu took silver, with Canada's Charle Cournoyer winning bronze.

"What a calm and calculated performance from Victor An. He will be a mega star on ice. He got an awful start, but it looked like he knew what was going to happen. Amazing skating."

Gold for Russia! A fifth success for Victor An and second for his adopted nation at these Games, after winning three under the flag of South Korea. It looked like An had been left in the blocks but, after Wenhao Liang fell, he came from the back of the field to take gold.

Matthew Arnott:, external I can't claim to be an expert in short track speed skating but that decision makes absolutely no sense to me. Elise was robbed.

Ben Dunbar:, external I'd like to see Team GB make Elise Christie their flag carrier in the closing ceremony. She's been cheated out of a medal there.

Rach Hawthorne:, external So angry at the decision to penalise Elise Christie. She did nothing wrong! She kept out the way and then got wiped out! Pathetic.

The first period of the men's ice hockey semi-final was goalless, the second period is just getting started. You can watch on the Red Button and at the top of this page. The final of the men's 500m short track is under the gun...

    Wilf O’Reilly

"It was a very positive skate from Jon Eley. He gave it his best shot, he made an excellent start and might be a little bit disappointed."

  18. Short Track Speed Skatingpublished at 17:52 Greenwich Mean Time 21 February 2014

The long-legged Eley can only manage third in the B final, meaning he places seventh overall. Going back to the Elise Christie decision, am I risking your ire be saying I agree with Sam? Christie certainly looked to nudge Jianrou Li before they both hit the deck.

  19. Short Track Speed Skatingpublished at 17:50 Greenwich Mean Time 21 February 2014

Thanks, Sam. Men's 500m B final is under way. Jon Eley is in the field.

  20. Postpublished at 17:49 Greenwich Mean Time 21 February 2014

Time for the men's 500m finals now, with Jon Eley racing for GB in the B final to decide places five to eight. I'm off to rail against the injustice of it all. Here's Stephan Shemilt to see you through.
