    Biathlon: Women's 10k pursuit

    Rob Walker
    Commentator on BBC TV

It's very hard to lead, albeit with a 24-second head start, but you know that everybody else is out to get you.

Total concentration is required when you get into the range for the first time.

The target is 4.5cms wide when the athletes are lying down. I wouldn't get within metres of it.

Skiing uphill is quite something to watch isn't it?

Laura Dahlmeier leads after 1.6km by 15.5 seconds. So she's lost some time.

Defending champion Darya Domracheva is away, 46 seconds back from the leader. But my man Rob Walker reckons she is capable of challenging from there.

Going clean at the shooting range will be key. A reminder that if you miss a shot you have to do a 150m loop, which takes about 23 seconds.

Here we go then. Can anyone chase down Laura Dahlmeier? She starts with a 24-second lead so hitting the target with every shot could be what it's all about.

It was such a good atmosphere last night when Arnd Peiffer won the men's event. I made a comment on air about him celebrating with a pint of beer and he confirmed afterwards in his press conference that he was going off to drink a litre of beer! Hopefully he's sobered up before he competes this afternoon...

Laura Dahlmeier, who won gold in the sprint title over the weekend, will start the pursuit first, with a 24-second lead over the pack.

Sounds like a lot - but remember for every shot they miss on the range they have to complete a 150m penalty loop which takes around 25 seconds.

    Ski. Shoot. Suffer.

Biathlon is one of the most gruelling events on the Olympic programme, requiring superhuman cardiovascular ability. Depending on the event, biathletes ski between six and 20km.

They stop two or four times along the way to shoot at five targets from 50m with a rifle whilst standing or lying down; in the latter, targets are only the size of a golf ball. Each miss in the individual event results in a one-minute penalty; in other events, a 150m penalty loop is skied instead.

    Ski jumping (12:50 GMT)

    Ollie Williams
    Commentator on BBC TV

Ski jump theoretically starts three hours from now. The wind is howling outside and I'm at the foot of the hill.

Nordic combined scrapped two sets of training jumps earlier. There is a wind net alongside the course designed to help, but even so, I wonder if it'll go ahead.

Biathlon is the sweatiest discipline at the Winter Olympics. Men typically produce 2.3 litres (four pints) of perspiration in the 20km individual event and burn over 3,000 calories.

    Switzerland 3-1 Japan

It's all over in the ice hockey and the Swiss have picked up a reasonably comfortable win.

Only the men's group winners and top two in each women's group are guaranteed to progress to the knockout phase. That win leaves Switzerland top with two wins from two.

    Japan have lost both games.

Unfortunately she will not be involved in the pursuit as she only finished 67th in the sprint. Only the top 60 qualify for the pursuit.
