It may be all done for British speed skaters but GB aren’t finished on the ice today as bobsledders Mica McNeill and Mica Moore hit the Olympic sliding track after 11:50 GMT.

Six months ago the sport’s federation bizarrely blew their budget early and decided to axe support of the women’s programme and back the men’s four-man team.

The four-man line-ups do represent stronger medal contention but after raising over £40,000 through crowd-funding the women arrive her with an outside chance too.

They have a best-place finish of fifth in the World Cup this season but have been ranked as high as third in the pre-Games official training runs.

This has been a plan for her for a very long time. I think she needs to come down and relax before she decides what she does next.

  3. 'I'm a bit shell-shocked'published at 10:59 Greenwich Mean Time 20 February 2018

    Short track: Women's 1000m

More from Elise Christie on BBC One: "I don't know how I got a yellow card. I have never had one in my life. I went up the inside and I passed the girl. I have no idea.

"The only thing I can think of is if the referee doesn't think I was safe enough to race. I can see why he might not want me to race like that. He was encouraging me to get off the ice.

"You'll have to ask me tomorrow how I feel. I'm a bit shell-shocked. I worked so hard to get back from this injury. I promise Britain I will fight from this and I will come back in Beijing and hopefully I can do Britain proud then.

"I have so much belief in the programme and in myself. It wasn't through a lack of capability it was just short track. What else can I say? Everyone has been a massive support - most of the people anyway.

"It's just frustrating having to wait four more years. It just wasn't meant to be this time. I would just like to thank all the kids who have sent me messages saying they are inspired.

"They have no idea how much that means to me. The fact five, six, seven year-olds find me inspiring brings tears to my eyes."

  4. 'If somebody is given a penalty, WHY?'published at 10:56 Greenwich Mean Time 20 February 2018

There was immense courage that Elise Christie showed to get on the ice and to then go back to the start and be 20-30 metres off the pace, and close the gap in a qualifying position.

What I understand is there were two issues - I don't think it was a penalty at all. She got a yellow card which is basically a warning for dangerous skating. If you are one of the favourites you will always be watched more than other skaters.

Clearly the referees are under such pressure here that based on the filming they have seen they have given the penalty.

I don't really know. The rules and regulations will be voted on. And it is certainly something I will be putting forward - If somebody is given a penalty, WHY?

The fortunate thing is the whole world has seen this. It should encourage future funding.

On a return in Beijing: It is all about experience. Maybe it's just about taking a break from the high-profile image she has in the sport? She can then start focusing on the sport and maybe she can take a different route.

Elise Christie speaking to BBC One: "To be honest, not much [is going through my mind.] A few days ago I didn't think I'd be getting on the ice.

"I did everything I could to change it around. I had ligament damage and putting skates on wasn't comfortable. We did everything but it obviously wasn't meant to to be.

"If it was another competition I wouldn't have got on the ice. The only reason I was given a choice was because it's the Olympics.

"I trained all my life for this. It was everything to me. It's done. I don't know, I felt I owed it to Britain. I want to get short track out there. It's an amazing sport but sometimes it does this to you."

As a nation it is time for us to throw all funding Elise Christie’s way now for 2022...take it from every other sport and give it to her. 100% backing, nothing less will do.

Going out on a limb here possibly but I've run out of sympathy for Elise Christie. 5 DQs out of 6 races over 2 Olympics strikes me as being poor execution not bad luck? In the world of cold hearted PR she'll be revered as the maverick wild woman of skating - her two best outcomes were Gold medal or DQ.

  10. "I'll go to Beijing"published at 10:43 Greenwich Mean Time 20 February 2018

Elise Christie is able to laugh when asked to "sum up these Games".

    You've got to love that.

"I can barely bend my knee," she says, before committing herself to coming back for Beijing.

Count me in. Count us all in.

Not having as much confidence meant Elise Christie took the easier route [on the inside].

Elise Christie holds it together during that interview remarkably well.

"I've no idea why I have got a yellow card," she says.

She also says that the referee was encouraging her to get off the ice after her initial crash.

  13. "I should have been off for six weeks"published at 10:41 Greenwich Mean Time 20 February 2018

Elise Christie says that she has ligament damage to her ankle which has been painful.

"It just wasn't meant to be," she says before saying that she should have been off the ice for five or six weeks.

"I might well have damaged it even more," she says.

    That's it.

Britain's interest in the short track is over for another Winter Olympics. And no medals in the bag.

Now Elise Christie, fitness permitting, will turn her attention to defending her world titles.

In the end there was just too much speed for Charlotte Gilmartin. She goes out of the competition at the first hurdle. The nerves got the better of her.

That's what sport is. That's why we keep watching because it is so unpredictable. Elise Christie gave it everything and that is all we can ask for.

  19. 'What a competitor'published at 10:36 Greenwich Mean Time 20 February 2018

That was epic viewing. I don't know how Elise Christie can pick herself up from this latest setback but I'm absolutely certain that she will...

Paul Barrow: I don't know much about the rules of speed skating, but I know a sickening blow when I see one. That was brutal.

Helen Lewis: Anybody else taking what's happened to Elise Christie really personally? Hold your head up high Elise, all of Britain is really proud of you.

Robert Herman: I don’t think I have ever seen a more cursed athlete than Elise Christie! This is just ridiculous now!
