Austria’s Benjamin Karl has been a dominant force on the global scene for the last decade. However, the four-time world champion arrived in Pyeongchang as a big fitness doubt.

Karl looks as fit as a fiddle to me. That's because he's just knocked out Andreas Prommegger in all-Austrian affair.

Prommeggar finished ahead of his rival in last year's World Championships, but Karl gains the ultimate revenge in Pyeongchang.

Whatever happens we're going to have a new Olympic champion in the men's event. That's because Vic Wild - the American-born boarder who won gold for Russia four years ago - is out.

Italian Roland Fischnaller produces a stunning performance to win by a healthy 0.93 seconds.

Some might say it was a Wild performance from Vic. Sorry.

So, along with Ledecka, we know the identity of the other seven women's quarter-finalists.

Russian Alena Zavarzina, a bronze medallist in Sochi four years ago, is also through, as is Japanese veteran Tomoka Takeuchi who is competing in a fifth straight Games.

Aside from Ledecka's comfortable progression into the quarter-finals, the other big news came in the race before.

Milena Bykova, an Olympic athlete from Russia, almost ran over a squirrel on her way down the slope. I'd have been going nuts if that had happened to me...

Easy peasy for Ledecka. She wins her heat against Patrizia Kummer of Switzerland without barely breaking sweat.

The Czech crosses the line 0.71 seconds ahead of her opponent.

Ester Ledecka is aiming for some serious history.

The 22-year-old from the Czech Republic will definitely become the first athlete to compete in both skiing and snowboarding at the Winter Olympics.

Having claimed a shock victory in the women's super G by 0.01 seconds ahead of defending champion Anna Veith a week ago, she will aim to become only the fifth athlete to win gold in two sports at a Winter Games.

Unlike the previous athletes to achieve this milestone - all four of whom competed in Nordic events - Ledecka is aiming to win gold in two completely unrelated events.

    Alpine mixed team event

The other event of British interest was on the ski slope. The British team weren't considered among the favourites in the alpine mixed team event - which sees two women and two men go head-to-head with their opponents on parallel slopes - but did well to reach the quarter-finals.

However, that's where their journey was ended by Norway.

At the same time as Morgan was anxiously waiting to learn whether he'd bag a medal or not, two British bobsleigh sleds were also starting their campaigns.

How does it feel to be an Olympic medallist?

“It’s not sunk in yet, it’s wild," Morgan told BBC Sport

The 28-year-old fell in practice and explained: “I had a hard slam on my back and fell another three times so I’m a little bit sore but luckily I don’t need to do any more snowboarding today so that’s good.”

His dad had a stroke last year but family and friends were staying up to watch: "They were all in a bar near the dry ski slope where I learned to snowboard in Southampton. I’m sure they were enjoying themselves!”

Only one place to start: Billy Morgan.

The 28-year-old from Southampton won bronze in the men's snowboard big air to secure Great Britain their highest medal tally in Winter Olympics history.

It is Team GB's fifth medal in Pyeongchang, taking them past the four won in 1924 and 2014.

It follows a skeleton gold for Lizzy Yarnold as well as bronze medals for Dom Parsons, Laura Deas and Izzy Atkin.

British snowboard coach Hamish McKnight (below) is understandably delighted at Morgan’s medal - after Jenny Jones made history in Sochi four years ago.

“Two medals in two Games, it’s becoming a bit of a habit! As long as it’s not made a rule,” he quipped.

“It’s an all or nothing sport as we’ve seen. Max Parrot nailed five 1800s one after the other in training but couldn’t in the final.”

What last words of advice did he give Morgan as he was about to jump?

“I told him to check his speed because he’s overshot it a few times. Thankfully he did and he landed two very good jumps.”

Morgan is known to enjoy a party and McKnight is expecting a large one tonight.

“I’m getting pre-party apprehension just thinking about it!” he added.
