"May you carry his Olympic dream on your shoulders and compete with his spirit in your heart."

Those were the words the grieving athletes heard at the opening ceremony of the 2010 Winter Games after Georgian luger Nodar Kumaritashvili died in a training crash just hours earlier.

They could also have been directed at his then nine-year-old cousin Saba.

Now 21, Saba has become the first Georgian luger to compete at an Olympics at Beijing 2022.

Saba was in 31st place after Saturday's opening two runs at the Yanqing sliding centre, but his participation was about much more than numbers.

Shaun White will be chasing a fourth Olympic halfpipe gold at the Genting Snow Park.

Qualification for the halfpipe takes place on Wednesday, with the final on Friday.

He attributed his decision to retire to lingering knee and back problems.

"The thing I'm the most proud of would be staying on top of a sport that's ever-changing for as long as I have," he said.

"Norway were expected to win two gold medals on day one according to our Virtual Medal Table forecast and won two," says Simon Gleave, head of sports analysis, Nielsen Gracenote.

"As they are meeting expectations so far, our updated virtual medal table still has them finishing on a record 44 medals, including a record 21 golds.

"Germany and Russia Olympic Committee are both one medal ahead of expectations, as are Austria and Hungary outside the top 10.

"The Dutch had the worst day, missing out on two of the three medals they were forecasted to win. Sweden, France and Japan won one fewer medal today than expected.

"This is our updated virtual medal table."

    Women's skiathlon

The first gold of the Games went to Norway's 33-year-old Therese Johaug, who dominated the women's 15km skiathlon.

The Norwegian, who had won 14 world titles but never an individual Olympic gold, missed the 2018 Pyeongchang Games while serving a doping ban.

It looked exhausting. Here's her winning moment.

They serve food, make cocktails and clean up. Where can I get one, I hear you ask?

Behind the scenes at the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics, the future is already here.

Covid-19 measures mean Star Wars R2-D2-esque robots are a familiar sight in media centres and hotels, cleaning and reminding people to wear their masks.

Temperature checks, cooking and delivering food are all offered as an automated service. It even extends to mixology - meaning you can be sipping your favourite cocktail without even having to tip the bartender.

  11. Valieva living up to the hypepublished at 03:22 Greenwich Mean Time 6 February 2022

    Figure skating

    Sonia Oxley
    BBC Sport in Beijing

Kamila Valieva has delivered an absolutely stunning routine to put the Russian Olympic Committee in the lead in the figure skating team event.

Just shy of her best ever score (90.45) she scored 90.18 for her routine to In Memoriam by Kirill Richter to become the first woman to score more than 90 for a short program at the Olympics.

So far she's living up to the hype - for context, the second best score today was 74.73 for Japan's Wakaba Higuchi.

In the women's individual event she will be up against two fellow Russian teenagers - also tipped for the podium - but still, that is a huge gulf in class today.

From 07:00, GB's Andrew Musgrave will be in action in the men's skiathlon.
