Brittany Bowe, now up for the US.

The 33-year-old is the only skater besides Miho Takagi (still to come) to have won a 1500m World Cup race event this season, albeit her victory in Calgary came in a race her rival skipped.

She is miles down mind and finishes over two seconds outside Ireen Wust's time, in eighth.

Makayla Gerken Schofield became the first Briton to reach a moguls finals at a Winter Olympics as Australia's Jakara Anthony won the gold medal.

Older sister Leonie, 23, failed to advance beyond the second qualification round on Sunday and both have been chatting about their achievements and the sibling pride they share on BBC TV.

"I don't think I've taken it in yet, I'm still struggling to speak about it, very speechless but it's been amazing," said Makayla Gerken Schofield.

Leonie Gerken Schofield added: "It was incredible, for me there was no room for disappointment, it was a great evening, we both had so much fun.

"To see Makayla in the finals, I had tears in my eyes, it was one the best evenings of my life and I'm really proud of her.

"It's feels surreal to be here but for me this it's gave me the fire to keep going."

More from Russian women's hockey player Anna Shibanova on the masks situation in their 6-1 defeat by Canada: "We were allowed to take off the masks [in the third period] so we finished the game without masks, but the Canadians decided to continue wearing them.

"It is not a nice feeling. There's not enough air.

"You go on the bench and pull the mask to the side to breathe, but everyone is in the same conditions. The Canadians played the whole game in masks."

Chaotic opening to Canadian victorypublished at 09:26 Greenwich Mean Time 7 February 2022

    Women's ice hockey

Canada's 6-1 Group A win over the Russian Olympic Committee (ROC) got off to a chaotic and confusing start earlier.

The match started an hour late and when it did get going, players from both sides wore face masks initially.

Six members of the ROC squad were placed in isolation last week after testing positive for Covid-19 and it appeared as though there were issues over the timeliness of test results.

Anna Shibanova, who played in defence for the Russian side, said: "It is out of our control. At the laboratory, they were not ready to give our PCR test results.

"We did the tests in the morning, everything was fine, we went to the game. This is out of our control. We were told to play in masks and that's what we did.

"We wanted to play, but everything was unclear. We were asked to wait, we waited. We were asked to wait more, we waited more. Then there was the decision that we should put on masks. We put them on without any issue and came out.

"In the warm-up everybody came out without masks and after the warm-up they told us to wear masks. That part was unclear."

Sisters Hanna and Elvira Oberg, from Sweden, are favourites and even finished on the podium together at recent World Cup events.

Hanna, 26, won individual gold in 2018. Elvira, 22, is ahead of Hanna in this season's rankings. Austria's Lisa Theresa Hauser, extraordinarily accurate in a sport that combines shooting and skiing, is also a big contender.
