Teenager Kirsty Muir ensured Team GB representation in the Winter Olympics ski big air final after finishing seventh in qualifying with a score of 157.50.

The 17-year-old was among 12 jumpers to advance to Tuesday's final - but compatriot Katie Summerhayes agonisingly missed out in 13th, while James Woods was also eliminated from the men's competition.

"I was really happy to land my first jump, as I had crashed during practice a bit," Muir said after scoring 89.25 - the second highest individual tally in qualifying.

It's been a dramatic day in terms of skiing at the Winter Olympics.

Switzerland's Beat Feuz won a thrilling men's downhill, with 41-year-old Frenchman Johan Clarey taking silver to become the oldest Olympic medallist in alpine skiing.

"When you are a medallist, whether you are 20 or 41 it doesn't matter," said Clarey.

Mikaela Shiffrin's hopes of retaining her giant slalom title ended early when she slipped and missed a gate on the first run. With Shiffrin out of contention, Sweden's Sara Hector took gold.

And Slovenia struck gold in the inaugural ski jumping mixed team event after a final shaped by several disqualifications.

  6. Watch: Parrot wins controversial snowboard slopestyle goldpublished at 14:16 Greenwich Mean Time 7 February 2022

Now then, Canada's Max Parrot took the Olympic snowboard slopestyle gold with the "best run of his life" earlier.

It comes three years after the 27-year-old was diagnosed with cancer but there was a huge whiff of controversy over the judging of his second run, after he seemed to miss a key element of a jump.

His second-run score of 90.96 landed him the title, with China's 17-year-old Su Yiming taking silver and Canadian Mark McMorris securing the bronze.

"This is a mistake on the judges' part," said BBC commentator Ed Leigh.

While we are on the subject of speed skating....

Ireen Wust became the first person to win an individual gold medal at five different Olympics by retaining her 1500m title in stunning fashion at Beijing 2022.

The Dutchwoman set an Olympic record of one minute 53.28 seconds to beat Japan's Miho Takagi, with Wust's compatriot Antoinette de Jong in third.

It is a record-extending 12th Olympic speed skating medal for 35-year-old Wust, who is retiring next month.

Bruce Mouat and Jen Dodds have just been speaking on BBC Two...

Mouat: "We controlled that which is the toughest part for us. We were in control for the first four and even in the fifth end we were looking good for a multiple.

"I am just disappointed more at my last three ends. Jen played amazing all day. I am disappointed more about what I have done for the team than myself. It is tough."

Dodds: "Bruce said it all. We were in control for most of the game. I felt that was the best we played all week so I think it makes it even harder to take.

"We gave ourselves a chance at the end and that is all we could ask for. We have to regroup for tomorrow - there is still a medal to be won out there."

Mouat: "We pushed them as far as we could. It will be tough to get over but there is a medal still up for grabs and we are hungry for it."

Great Britain really came out in the first four ends and dominated and Norway kept themselves in it but that powerplay at the sixth end really was a turning point in the game.

Really well played by Norway to get their three and Great Britain when they played their powerplay were forced to take their one.

It's Norway who go to the Olympic final.

It was a close contest all the way through but they got better as it went on.

Great Britain started superbly well but just a few small mistakes in the last two and three ends opened the door for Norway and they took it with both hands.
