Disappointment for Ireland's Jack Gower as he fails to complete the men's super-G course.

From a junior world title and numerous broken bones to a very famous sporting relative, Jack Gower's rise to the Winter Olympics has been interesting to say the least.

The 27-year-old realised a lifelong dream when he hit the slopes for Ireland at the Games.

Gower, who switched allegiance from Great Britain to Ireland last year, is competing in two events at the Games in Beijing.

After skiing once a year with his family when he was younger, a move of house when he was 12 brought Gower into the sport he would grow to love.

Gower, whose father's cousin is ex-England cricketer David Gower, will be going shortly in the men's super-G event.

Invalid element for element one after popping his opening quad salchow. His component scores are going to help him and pull him through.

As we saw with Nathan Chen four years ago, that performance would not put him in a medal performance right now.

Big gasp in the arena as Yuzuru Hanyu misses his first jump - it was supposed to be a quad salchow.

So he’s been marked down and his score of 95.15 gives him an uphill battle to successfully defend his title.

The door is open, Nathan Chen…

    Men's super-G

This super-G course is certainly a tricky one and seven of the competitors have failed to set a time.

The top three remains the same, with Matthias Mayer of Austria seeking out his third Winter Olympics gold medal. It would also be his second medal in Beijing after coming third in the downhill on Monday.

American Ryan Cochran-Siegle is still on course for silver, with Aleksander Kilde of Norway in third.

Team GB teenager Kirsty Muir finished fifth in a pulsating ski big air final as the event made its Winter Olympics debut in Beijing.

In a high-quality final the 17-year-old, Britain's youngest athlete at the Games, scored 169.00, including a 90.25 on her first jump.

Home favourite Eileen Gu claimed the gold with 188.25 after a massive 94.50 on her final jump, which pushed France's Tess Ledeux into silver with 187.50. Switzerland's Mathilde Gremaud claimed bronze.

We've had three groups competing in the men's short program, with two more to go. So far, Russian Olympic Committee's Evgeni Semenenko is leading the way with 95.76, but we have a lot of the big names to come....

After a little bit more ice preparation we'll get a first glimpse of Japanese defending champion Yuzuru Hanyu, he'll be third to go in the next group.

His main rival Nathan Chen of the United States is in the final group.

Oh my word! Mayer does it again. What a finish from Matthias Mayer - what a way to turn it around from that ridiculous start where he almost skied out early.

He had to reverse and go again and the first 30 seconds were a little shaky but what a recovery from Matthias Mayer.

  14. Another gold for Mayer?published at 03:49 Greenwich Mean Time 8 February 2022

    Men's super-G

Matthias Mayer won the men's super-G four years ago in Pyeongchang and claimed gold in the downhill in Sochi four years before that.

The Austrian is on course for his third Winter Olympics gold medal as he still leads in the men's super-G with a time of 1:19.94.

American Ryan Cochran-Siegle, whose mother Barbara Cochran picked up gold in the women's slalom in the 1972 Games, is second, just four hundredths of a second slower than Mayer.

Norway's Aleksander Kilde is currently third in 1:20.36.

    Women's ski big air final

Britain's Kirsty Muir, who came fifth in the women's ski big air final, says: "I'm so happy right now honestly, the level was insane.

"I went for the 12 in my first run and the blunt grab, and that's the best I've ever done it.

"I went for a Switch Misty 10 in the last jump which I've never tried before - I just wanted to go for it, and I'm just so happy that I went and tried it."

On watching the three medals being decided: "14s and 16s everywhere - it's insane. Did Mathilde [Gremeaud] try an 18 I didn't even see it? And Eileen doing it on that 16, honestly it is insane."

On finishing fifth in her first Olympic final: "It feels amazing [to be a part of it]. I couldn't have hoped to have skied better today and I'm so proud of all the girls."
