The first of the two Britons to go will be Charlie Guest, who will be the 24th athlete to set off.

The Scot nearly gave up the sport but is enjoying a fantastic season with three top-20 finishes at World Cup events in 2022.

She’s got some British support waiting at the bottom.

She will be back for the final tomorrow. Maybe she will chat to us then?

American Mikaela Shiffrin has been sat to the side of the course for the past 20 minutes, still unable to fathom what has happened to her Winter Olympics - failing to finish in both this event and the giant slalom.

  5. Guest's incredible storypublished at 02:47 Greenwich Mean Time 9 February 2022

    Women's slalom

For Britain's Charlie Guest to be competing today at the Winter Olympics is a minor miracle.

In November 2014 she fractured four vertebrae as a result of hitting a boulder during giant slalom training in Funasdalen, Sweden.

She spent eight hours on a spinal board travelling 250km to a hospital in Oestersund. At the insistence of her coach, she was wearing a back protector during the training session, which she credits with saving her from further injury.

"I was pretty terrified about how serious my injuries were," she said.

"I realise how extremely lucky I am that my injuries are not more severe. I owe my coach Stefan (Moser) the biggest thank you of my life for his insistence that I wear my back protector."

The accident nearly ended her career but she returned to racing in February 2015 - and competed in the 2018 Games, finishing 33rd in this event.

Go on Charlie, the whole country is behind you.

It's a terrible start for Shiffrin.

Unbelievable! It's a repeat of her nightmare in the giant slalom the other day.

All the hype and all the build up surrounding Mikaela Shiffrin has come to nothing.

Not again!!! Mikaela Shiffrin is out of the slalom!

Just like in Monday’s giant slalom.

She’s missed a gate early on, no one can believe it.

  10. Disaster for Shiffrin!published at 02:30 Greenwich Mean Time 9 February 2022

    Women's slalom

All eyes were on American Mikaela Shiffrin, but she's had an absolute disaster. She doesn't even make it to gate seven.

She's then seen crouching down, and sitting on the snow. It's a lonely, lonely place to be. She won gold in this event in 2014, and then the giant slalom four years later. But she's out.

The women's snowboard halfpipe qualification is now moving on to the Red Button and it's now the first run of the women's slalom that is our main attention on BBC One.

It's a field of 88, including two Brits - Charlie Guest, who will go 24th, and Alex Tilley, the 39th to head down the course.

Ireland's Tess Arbez will be the 75th to have a go.

The second runs will start at 05:45 GMT and the medals will be decided later on this morning.

It’s definitely a lot colder here than it has been in recent days. Three pairs of socks are not doing their job.

The bubble score at the moment is sitting at 62.5.

It was a canter for Chloe Kim. She barely got out of second gear.

You want to see the top riders make it through.

You don't want to see any mistakes from them, but really nice to see the rookies doing well.

You don't want to be scared of these hits, you want to be full throttle.

It was another gold for Matthias Mayer - who was king of the slopes again - the third Games in a row where he has won a gold medal after super-G success four years ago and downhill gold eight years ago.

It was also his second medal in two days after picking up a downhill bronze on Monday.

    Snowboard halfpipe qualification

Malta's Jenise Spiteri is the next to have a painful time in the snowboard halfpipe qualification.

She's still able to smile though and looks just delighted to be taking part at the Winter Olympics. There's not too much snow in Malta!

And she's done incredibly well to just be here as a quick look at her athlete profile page shows she's no stranger to injuries - having twice torn her anterior cruciate ligament (ACL).

She used to represent USA, but began representing Malta in 2015. Not only is she is the first snowboarder from Malta competing at any Winter Games, but also the only Maltese athlete at Beijing 2022 and was Malta's flagbearer at the opening ceremony.

One of those golds for Sweden yesterday came from Jonna Sundling as she sped to gold in the women's cross country sprint, on her Winter Olympic debut

While there was success for Johannes Hoesflot Klaebo - the King of Sprint - in the men's event.
