We've got seven riders in here with similar abilty levels but very different runs.

    This is a mouth-watering prospect.

Ayumu Hirano is a history-maker in men's halfpipe.

In December, he became the first man to land a triple cork in competition. That trick sees the rider spin 1440 degrees on the horizontal axis whilst corkscrewing the rotation, so the head goes under the board three times.

Will we see it at the Olympics? Chances are high.

Now it's the men's turn with the snowboard halfpipe qualification.

We've got 25 entrants and 12 of them will advance into the final. They all get two runs and their best score counts.

American Shaun White, at the age of 35, is aiming for his fourth gold in this event after winning in Torino in 2006, Vancouver in 2010 and Pyeongchang in 2018.

But first he has to qualify before Friday's final.

This is our focus on BBC One and prepare to be amazed and entertained with some of the best action you'll see throughout the Games.

You've already won gold, then you might as well grab your country's flag, hold it throughout your jump and nail the landing.

Well played Birk Ruud, well played.

Look at the flag in his hands. Birk Ruud just made that look so easy.

Looked in a different class today. He has claimed the first ever freeskiing gold medal.

Drama, entertainment and an incredibly high level of skiing.

Henrik Harlaut - really nice, solid landing and on his third Olympics you would not begrudge him. He's done so much for the sport.

    Men's freeski big air final

Some brilliant showboating from Olympic champion Birk Ruud. He knows he has the gold medal in the bag before his final effort, so he grabs a Norwegian flag and, while holding it, manages to land his final jump.

Ruud wins with a score of 187.75, American Colby Stevenson is second with 183, Sweden's Henrik Harlaut is third with 181, edging out compatriot Oliwer Magnusson, who has to settle for fourth with 178.25.

  12. "Legal issue" delays medal ceremonypublished at 04:02 Greenwich Mean Time 9 February 2022

    Figure skating team event

    Anna Thompson
    BBC Sport in Beijing

There's a very interesting development from the team figure skating event - as the medal ceremony has yet to take place because of a legal issue.

The Russian Olympic Committee took the win on Monday, with the United States second and Japan third and the medal ceremony should have taken place on the medals plaza here in Beijing on Tuesday.

IOC spokesman Mark Adams has confirmed the legal issue but has not expanded on what it is.

"The situation arose and came at short notice," he said. "It’s an emerging issue so I can't add very much at the moment."

An update has been promised later on Wednesday.

Canada's Evan McEachran then desperately tries to get himself into the medals, and just like Nummedal before him, ends up eating snow. But they make them tough in this event and he looks OK.

That was a massive hit for Christian Hummedal - and look at him, straight up! How did he walk away from that!

  16. Postpublished at 03:59 Greenwich Mean Time 9 February 2022

    Men's freeski big air final

We're getting to the business end of the men's big air final and Christian Nummedal of Norway goes for broke - and is nearly broken.

It's a huge crash into the snow. It was all or nothing and he had a score of 93 in the second run and if he'd matched that he would've got a medal.

But not to be. But what a competitor, he springs straight to his feet with a rueful smile on his face and appears completely unhurt. Go big, or go home.

He's down in 10th but absolutely gave it his all.

  19. In Ruud healthpublished at 03:48 Greenwich Mean Time 9 February 2022

    Men's freeski big air final

This is how it stands after two of three runs in the men's freeski big air final.

The judges can only give them a score of 100 per run, so 95.75 from Birk Ruud in the first run is an extraordinary effort. He's leading the way with one run to go.

But he will know the job isn't done just yet. In the women's event yesterday Eileen Gu was third after two runs and snatched gold away from France's Tess Ledeux with a stunning move that she'd never previously landed.
