Birk Ruud was too light at the bottom! That was a clear sign to Andri Ragettli, get creative and use the corners of this course, find the points of difference. He qualified in first place, this is the final chance for one of the most technically gifted skiers of his generation.

Oooh, it's good, it's very good... is this enough from Birk Ruud?! Alexander Hall watches on with his arms folded, a nervy wait to find out the score.

The judges are taking their time over this. It's not! A 79.93 places him fifth.

So Alexander Hall is guaranteed a medal in the sloperstyle... it's an American one-two. Can Norway's Birk Ruud change that on his final run?

    Thomas Duncan

A blow for GB as Eve Muirhead can't take out enough Chinese stones with her last rock.

Wang Rui draws in for the first two of the match. 4-3 heading into the last three ends.

The hammer in the last for Britain could prove crucial.

    Men's slalom

Here is GB's Dave Ryding, speaking to BBC Sport after his first run: "50% good, 50% not - in the finish a little far off than I wanted.

"The skiing was good at the top but I didn't adapt to the change in terrain. It is a two-run race and I will try again.

"You are always more in the zone on the second one, you are ready to go, it is not over, the fat lady is not singing yet."

  8. Strolz strolls into leadpublished at 02:50 Greenwich Mean Time 16 February 2022

    Men's slalom

Johannes Strolz is on the money, whipping through the poles to clock a target-setting 53.92 - great stuff from the Austrian.

Dave Ryding has been pushed down to 13th at the moment.

Bill Holland: Such a shame that Dave lost control in that midsection. Chance gone. Ah well.

    Keep the faith, Bill...

  10. 'Fingers crossed he lets it rip in the second run'published at 02:44 Greenwich Mean Time 16 February 2022

    Men's slalom

    Sir Matthew Pinsent
Four-time Olympic rowing champion on BBC TV

The green lights that go up on the top sections to show the timings are an indicator of how good a skier Dave Ryding is when he gets it right. But in that middle section where the incline drops a little, the course gets a bit flatter so the speed slipped away and he dropped down the order.

He was just under a second behind after his first run in Kitzbuhel so that's the thing to cling on to. He knows everything about keeping calm between the two runs so fingers crossed he does that and then for run two lets it rip down the mountain side.

Women's curling - China 2-3 Great Britain (after seven ends)

    Thomas Duncan
    BBC Scotland in Beijing

We're still going with the pattern of the game so far.

Both skips have been left with draws for one at the end of each end. No misses so far.

GB hit the front, China with the hammer into the seventh end.

If it continues like this, Eve Muirhead will have the last stone in the 10th end.

  14. Mistake costs Rydingpublished at 02:39 Greenwich Mean Time 16 February 2022

    Men's slalom

    Anna Thompson
    BBC Sport in Beijing

Dave Ryding was doing what he said he was going to do and was absolutely charging at the top of the course and the time splits had him in the lead.

But a mistake in the third section scrubs off a lot of time and he finishes 1.19 seconds behind the current leader.

It's not all over for Ryding.

He's famous for his second run charges and will need one of those to challenge for a medal.

  15. 'Ryding not out of this by any stretch'published at 02:38 Greenwich Mean Time 16 February 2022

    Men's slalom

    Matt Chilton
    Commentator on BBC TV

That was almost brilliant! The top section was excellent, there was a mistake but he was resourceful and he's kept himself in it. He's not out of this by any stretch of the imagination. He's got 1.19 seconds to find in his second run.

  16. Good start from Rydingpublished at 02:36 Greenwich Mean Time 16 February 2022

    Men's slalom

A couple of green lights but Dave Ryding can't quite keep up that early pace and slides to ninth after his first run with a time of 55.13 seconds. But that's a very good start!

  20. 'It's insanely close'published at 02:33 Greenwich Mean Time 16 February 2022

    Men's slalom

Now can Dave Ryding back up a World Cup win with what could be Britain's first alpine medal at a Winter Olympics?

The slalom is wide open as no one skier has dominated the World Cup this season. There has been a different winner of each of the six races.

Ryding has been doing his homework and said: "I've shown I can win one this year, 14 other people have shown they can have a podium and six other people have shown they can win.

"It's tight, fine margins. It's just insanely close."
