And the outcome of those last few pairs means Britain's Cornelius Kersten finishes ninth in the Olympic final.

Superb achievement for the self-funded 27-year-old who also runs a coffee business. He will be buzzing from a high that even caffeine can't match.

    Well done Cornelius!

That's absolutely crushing for the Dutchman [Kai Verbij] there. All that work, all that effort, all that preparation and then suddenly in that moment he just knew it was going out of the window.

  3. gold-medal

Gold medal - Thomas Krol (Net)published at 09:44 Greenwich Mean Time 18 February 2022

Kai Verbij races out from the line but Laurent Dubreuil fights back... and then Verbij pulls up!! Dubreuil goes over the line and that is good enough for silver.

While Verbij can't earn a medal, it does mean another Dutchman, Thomas Krul, holds onto the gold!

    Final standings:

    1 Thomas Krol (Net) 1:07.92

    2 Laurent Dubreuil (Can) 1:08.32

3 Haavard Holmefjord Lorentzen (Nor) 1:08:48

    4 Piotr Michalski (Pol) 1:08.56

    5 Zhongyan Ning (Chn) 1:08.60

    6 Ignat Golovatsiuk (Blr) 1:08.63

The final pair is Dutch world champion Kai Verbij and Canada's Laurent Dubreuil. Can one of these two snatch gold? You'd think they have a chance...

Two pairs to go. And Tim Krol's position is far from secure with some excellent athletes left.

By the way, Norway's Haavard Holmefjord Lorentzen - skating alongside Krol - also moved above Michalski.

First up is China's Zhongyan Ning and Hein Otterspeer of the Netherlands.

Ning goes fourth which means Krol is guaranteed a medal with one more pair to come.

Otterspeer is 10th, one place below Britain's Cornelius Kersten.

Cornelius Kersten is shoved off the podium as the big hitters arrive.

Poland's Piotr Michalski has been tops of the pops for a long time now, but here comes World Cup leader and European champion Tim Krol...

The Dutchman is one of the favourites and shows why! He whizzes round in one minute 7.92 seconds to go into the gold-medal position.

That was a magnificent skate there by Cornelius.

He skated a very good first 400m getting up to top speed. Then what you see in the last 300m is the skaters are really, really suffering with the tolerance of lactic acid.

He skated through it, maintained his technique and skated a very, very good time indeed.

With some excellent skaters to come in the final five pairs, it is highly doubtful that will be enough for Cornelius Kersten to win a medal. But he will definitely improve on his finishes in the 500m and 1500m.

Cornelius Kersten is over in one minute 8.79 seconds - that's provisional second place! Excellent run.

No wonder he roars with delight after pulling up around the bend. A high-five with one of the British support team show they're pleased too.

The ice has been smoothed and we're ready to roll. Here's Cornelius Kersten!

Oooh false start from the Brit. He's alongside Korea's Cha Min Kyu and the pair reset.

    Second time, we're off!

The Dutch are dominant in this event and perhaps that could work out well for Britain's Cornelius Kersten.

Kersten may not represent the Netherlands but he does have the DNA. That's because his father is from the Netherlands and the 27-year-old skater was raised there.

But he represents Britain because that's where his mother is from.

    Wilf O’Reilly

At the moment he's [Cornelius Kersten] currently ranked 11th in the world cup standings so that's a fabulous achievement but of course all the top skaters took part in the first four world cups.

Looking at his times and the times that have been skated here already, he is certainly capable of a top 12 classification here that would be a magnificent feat for the first time of asking for a first British long track speed skater for 30 years.

Britain's Cornelius Kersten ended up finishing 25th in the 500m on Saturday and 19th in the 1,500m 10 days ago.

Those races were not the specialist event of the self-funded Brit, who runs a coffee business with fellow skater and girlfriend Ellia Smedling.

The 1,000m is more his cuppa. Let's see if he can Mocha medal. (Sorry, that's the best we can brew.)

The ninth pair is Norway's Allan Dahl Johansson and Japan's Ryoto Kojima. Neither will be winning a medal, I'm afraid.

Now there will be a break at the National Speed Skating Oval. The ice needs a resurfacing job.

Eighteen down, 12 to come. Britain's Cornelius Kersten comes out after the patch-up of the track.
