    Disaster for Julia Marino!

Ouch, ouch, ouch. The American takes a slip off the rail, landing on it as she falls, and then can't stick a landing as she tries to regain her composure.

The judges give her 2.91 for her troubles. That's a real confidence-shaker. Her second run will have to be rather special...

The judges are perfectionists - and you will see that as we get to the business end of the qualification.

Now then, the judges really like that from Canada's Laurie Blouin.

The 25-year-old, who win a silver medal four years ago, goes into fourth position with a 66.85.

And that's quality too from the Netherlands Melissa Peperkamp, who uses the rails nicely but just can't keep it consistent. 61.26 leaves her sixth.

Japan's Miyabi Onitsuka moves directly below Katie Ormerod in the standings with a 42.60.

Compatriot Reira Iwabuchi, 20, follows her... Nicely done! She leaps to seventh with a 48.51 at the halfway stage of the first attempts. The judges are being harsh on any slip-ups here - they want absolute perfection.

Rong Ge is very 'stand-uppy' in her stance.

If your legs don't bend, then your body does. Your legs are your shock absorbers.

40% of your score is your style.

China's Rong Ge puts down a 29.36 on her first run and France's Lucile Lefevre manages 23.16 to leave GB's Katie Ormerod eighth with 12 athletes having had their first run.

A reminder that it's the top 12 athletes after two runs who will advance to the final.

Japanese 17-year-old Kokomo Murase is up next.

The teenager, known as ‘Girl Wonder’, would break Chloe Kim’s record as the youngest female snowboarding gold medallist at the Winter Olympics if she triumphs in Beijing...

And she begins her Winter Olympics debut with a really confident first run!

Wow, straight to the top of the standings. The youngster is scored 74.95. What a statement that is...

Finland's Carola Niemela scored 22.36, before Norway's Hanne Eilertsen sneaks just ahead of GB's Katie Ormerod with a 48.35.

What can Hailey Langland do now? A 28.31 for the American, who just struggled to get to grips with the course on that first outing.

Just making it to the start gate is a huge achievement for her.

Katie is rarely intimidated by big courses, but very steady. I haven't seen her do a straight backflip for a long time, so that's a real treat.

Getting that Crystal Globe was a gift.

A real achievement just for Katie Ormerod to be here of course.

    What can she produce here?

Nice and steady... and then a HUGE backflip! Love that. The judges mark her down for technicality - and it's a 47.38 for the Briton to begin at her first Games.

    Women's slopestyle qualification

Since her return to the slopes in 2019, Katie Ormerod has bagged five podium finishes in all and became the first British snowboarder to win the overall World Cup title in 2020.

"I learnt quite a lot about myself from that injury. It was definitely not an easy injury to overcome, and I now know anything that life throws at me I can overcome it," she says.

"I'm really appreciative of every single moment I have on my snowboard now because I'm really fortunate that I love what I do.

"I feel really grateful that I have another opportunity to compete in an Olympics."

A 55.98 for Australia's Tess Coady who is third up, and almost a disaster for Anna Gasser as she clips the first rail! The Austrian has to settle for 50.71 after that.

Speaking to BBC Sport's Katie Falkingham in October, Katie Ormerod was confident Beijing will be her Olympics.

"I feel like this is my time," she said.

"I've come back way stronger. I've had the most successful season of my career so far in between then and now, so I'm really in the best shape I've ever been in,

"I'm feeling nothing but positivity. I've done everything right, I'm snowboarding the best I've ever been snowboarding so all I can do is go there, have fun, do my best.

"I've put in all the hard work already so hopefully this will be my year."
