I was at the Vancouver Olympics in 2010 when Georgian luger Nodar Kumaritashvili was tragically killed on the day of the opening ceremony, during training.

He was attempting to become the first luger from his country to compete at a Winter Olympics.

Well, a Kumaritashvili has made history in these Games as Nodar's cousin Saba is racing and has completed his first run. You could just see a little smile when he took his face shield off after crossing the line.

He won't be troubling the podium but this run was about so much more than that for the extended Kumaritashvili family.

    Women's normal hill individual

The women's normal hill individual ski jumping is nearing its finale.

The athletes are on their second run and those with the highest scores from run one go last in a bid to post a huge total.

Here's the leader from round one, Germany's Katharina Althaus. She looks ice cool I think you'll agree. That ski mask hides emotion and she looks part daredevil ski-jumper, part poker player.

Althaus has been vocal in pushing for gender equality in the sport, raising earnings and calling on authorities to rearrange Covid-hit events for women at the same pace they do for men.

  3. 12 to become six...published at 12:21 Greenwich Mean Time 5 February 2022

    Men's moguls

The men's moguls is down to the elite 12 names - they'll all descend the course again and six will qualify for the final. You can watch this on BBC One or at the top of this live page now.

"What's moguls?" I hear you ask. A 250m descent where competitors have to turn aggressively and repeatedly to navigate the terrain. Throw in a couple of jumps and you get points for style, speed and height.

Think a sprint but with somersaults. What's not to like?

Mixed Curling - GB v Italy

It's been a tight opening end but it is Italy who lead 1-0.

But still plenty of stones in this one.

And you can follow all of the action on the BBC iPlayer and BBC Sport website.

  5. Staudinger solid on first luge runpublished at 12:16 Greenwich Mean Time 5 February 2022

    Men's luge

    Anna Thompson
    BBC Sport in Beijing

Britain's sole luger at these Games, Rupert Staudinger, puts down a solid first run in the men's luge.

He's in 21st place at the moment with a few more athletes to come and his aim is to be in the top 20 after three runs to race the fourth and final run.

He looked pleased with his efforts and even managed a cheeky wink to the cameras!

    Thomas Duncan

It's a big one at the Ice Cube for Jen Dodds and Bruce Mouat.

They're up against the unbeaten group leaders Italy, as the round-robin phase heats up. A win here would go a long way to securing a semi-final spot.

Luckily, Mouat has his lucky cap on again.

He said earlier he started wearing it after some commentators gave him stick about having a bad hair day at an event last year. Now, it's his lucky charm.

"I didn't play very well in the first three games, I put the hat on and now it's got super powers, apparently," he said. Whatever works, Bruce.

When British luger Rupert Staudinger races today, he will be wearing a helmet bearing a tribute to his friend and former GB luger AJ Rosen, who died at the age of 37 from cancer in December.

It is a simple tribute but the wording 'RIP AJ' had to be cleared by the IOC.

"It’s ever so sad," Staudinger told BBC Sport earlier this week.

"He’s played a huge part in my career and I’m pretty sure I wouldn’t be here if I hadn’t met this great, great guy.

"He just had so much positive energy, he spread that on everyone in the room with him, he was just a really funny and happy guy.

"Back in Pyeongchang in 2018 he was my room mate – it was my first Games and I was super nervous and always spent time chatting with him, he just had that energy and was really relaxed and had a great laugh always."

I think it was a fast race but Farrell looked tired at the end. Maybe if he had moved earlier he would have been in the pack but he had nothing at the end.

It has been a bit of a disappointing day for the team but there are more distances to go so it is about reassessing and coming back stronger.

  12. WATCH: GB's Kathryn Thomson crashes outpublished at 11:53 Greenwich Mean Time 5 February 2022

It's not been Team GB's day in the short track speed skating so far, with two crashes and a fourth place finish.

Here is how Kathryn Thomson crashed out on the first lap of the women's 500m heats.

All three athletes are competing in other distances though so this is not the end of their Games.

  13. Treacy eliminatedpublished at 11:51 Greenwich Mean Time 5 February 2022

    Short track - men's 1000m heat

Disappointment for Farrell Treacy, who was pushing for second at one stage but faded in the penultimate lap to cross the line fourth.

China's Ziwei Ren was the winner, with France's Quentin Fercoq the second qualifier.

  14. Height, distance and drama to come...published at 11:49 Greenwich Mean Time 5 February 2022

    Women's normal individual ski jump

I didn't know this but apparently you need a body mass index of at least 21 to take part in ski jumping.

While that yard stick may be in place, it is seen as advantageous to be as light as you can and that's why reigning Olympic champion - Norway's Maren Lunby - is not competing here in the women's normal individual ski jumping.

She said making the weight might jeopardise her health this time around and in her absence the Germany's Katharina Althaus just jumped a whopping 105m to score 121.1 points and top the standings.

Three Slovenian athletes occupy second to fourth. We are halfway through and the athletes' second and final jump will begin shortly.
