Kathryn Thomson has been out on the ice warming up for her 500m heat. She was looking relaxed and was practising her start.

There has been a lot of British heart-break in this event at the past two Games, with Elise Christie crashing in the final in 2018 and being disqualified four years before that.

But these are different Olympics - let's think positively!

Over at the Capital Indoor Stadium, they're getting the ice ready for the other speed skating - short track.

In around an hour we'll be under way with three Britons in action - Kathryn Thomson in the women's 500m heats and the Treacy brothers - Farrell and Niall - in the men's 1,000m heats.

And after that there is the new mixed team event, which should be a fun (chaotic?!) competition. China are favourites so will it be a first gold for the hosts at these Games?

What a race - it went to the last pair who were the first two in the World Cup rankings.

It has been a fantastic race. To prepare for these games amid Covid was outstanding. The drafting of Schouten in that race was fantastic. She had the inside lane at the end and put in a very strong final lap.
