  1. Thomson 'frustrated' but focusing on other distancespublished at 11:36 Greenwich Mean Time 5 February 2022

An emotional Kathryn Thomson has just spoken to BBC Sport: "I'm quite frustrated - to be taken down in the first half lap is quite disappointing but I've got two more distances so I'm just going to reset and refocus for them.

"I haven't watched it back yet but it felt like the Polish girl pushed my leg down, I don't think it was intentional."

  2. 'I had a big dream'published at 11:34 Greenwich Mean Time 5 February 2022

    Women's 3000m speed skating

Irene Schouten took gold in the 3000m women's speed skating.

Her success means the Dutch became the first nation to win three golds in a row in the event across the last three Olympics. Little wonder then she said she felt some pressure.

"There was a lot of pressure for myself and for the Netherlands and I'm so happy I made it," said Schouten, 29.

"Four years ago I did not qualify, so I wanted this one. When I was young I had a big dream to win Olympic gold and now I have it."

Earlier on today Therese Johaug won the first medal of the Games, blitzing her way to 15km skiathlon gold.

She won by 30.2 seconds and get this... that's the the biggest margin of victory in the Olympic women’s skiathlon.

Little wonder she needed a sit down after crossing the line.

    Short track - 500m women’s heats

USA Kristen Santos Elene Seregina of the Russian Olympic Committee are the final two skaters to qualify for the women's 500m.

Unsurprisingly Suzanne Schulting tops the time sheets with that new Olympic record time.

    Coming up, it's the men's 1000m heats.

This is not the end of Kathryn Thomson's Games. She is also competing in the 1000m and 1500m.

Time to move on quickly and focus on those races instead.

  7. 'Spreading the love'published at 11:25 Greenwich Mean Time 5 February 2022

    Sonia Oxley
    BBC Sport in Beijing

Team GB luger Rupert Staudinger is back for his second Games, hoping to improve on his 33rd place four years ago.

We asked him earlier this week what his aims at Yanqing sliding centre were.

"Mainly to spread the love of luge and spread the sport," he said.

"I want to do that by showing good results, so showing possibly four good runs, good lines, a decent start, good position and then we'll see what happens.

"Optimally a top-20 position would be awesome because then I’d get to have a fourth run, but that’s going to be a challenge."

What a disappointment for Kat Thomson. I think she just clashed blades with Maliszewska from Poland.

    That is short track.

You have to feel for Kathryn Thomson there, but it shows just how brutal this event can be.

All that hard work and your chances can be taken away in an instant.

Oh no! Kathryn Thomson crashes on the first corner and is eliminated!

This really is racing on the edge. They fizz around so fast it takes just a slight touch to send a skater to fall.

Minjeong Choi of Korea crosses the line first with Italy's Martina Valcepina second.

    Women's normal hill individual

What did you do on Saturday then?

Not much, I sent myself down a big icy hill at about 60mph, hurled myself into the Beijing night sky as if I owned a pair of wings, took in the view and eventually came back down to earth elegantly.

What did you get up to? Read the papers? Have a bacon butty?

That was a good start to competition from Suzanne Schulting and will ensure she gets a good starting position in the next round. She is strong across all distances and has worked hard on the 500m to improve that, particularly on her start.

Talk about laying down the guantlet.

  16. Gusting for gold...published at 11:11 Greenwich Mean Time 5 February 2022

    Women's normal hill individual

Irma Makhina of the Russian Olympic Committee just sailed 90 metres in the women's normal hill individual ski jumping event. She tops the standings on 85.4 points but the majority of the field are yet to jump. Things are being help up by the wind speed, which means athletes have to stand and wait to begin their run - only getting the green light when the wind drops enough.

No one needs a gust when you're hurling yourself into the night air at 60mph, do they?

  19. 'The fastest sport on ice'published at 11:00 Greenwich Mean Time 5 February 2022

Rupert Staudinger is set to represent GB in the men's singles luge from 11:10 GMT, having finished 33rd at Pyeongchang 2018.

In luge, athletes whizz at speeds above the motorway limit down sheer ice on small sleds - just as they do in skeleton - but what makes luge faster?

Average luge speeds are 120-145km/h, with skeleton at 120-130km/h, and Luge USA even once patented the phrase 'fastest sport on ice'.

Speaking to BBC Sport's Sonia Oxley, Staudinger has explained the differences and why the answer lies - of course - in simple physics.
