More from Kimberley Woods, who was speaking to BBC Breakfast after winning a bronze medal in K1 kayaking on Sunday:

How to get into Kayaking: "You can go to the kayaking website and see where you local canoe club is, there's so many different avenues. It is out there, you've just got to search in the right places."

On the Olympic village: "I'm not in the village, we're in a satellite hotel as it's too far away. We're with the rowers. I'll get to experience the Olympic village in the closing stages and the coming days. The opening ceremony looked pretty wet, which for someone in water sports isn't a bad thing."

On the canoe slalom event later in the games: "World number one and world champion, I'm probably one of the favourites, but I'm trying not to think about. I'm taking this and anything else from here is a bonus. At the top of the ramp, the battle is coming and I'm looking to go out and smash it. I'm really proud and thanks for everyone's support."

Kimberley Woods speaking on BBC Breakfast after winning a bronze medal in K1 kayaking on Sunday: "Absolutely buzzing, I'm a bit tired. A lot of media stuff, but I'm so thankful I've got the platform to talk about this sport and have that bronze medal.

On finishing 10th at Tokyo three years ago and the heartbreak of it: "Tokyo was a bit heart breaking, everyone saw it. Ugly crying. I was really happy with the guys at the bottom of the course and my team-mates, they were there for this one and I'm happy to have that support.

On support from family and her aunt buying her her first canoe: "They did. I'm not sure they knew what they got themselves in for, but they saw it yesterday, from that little girl. My aunt is happy to be super aunt and I now hope I'm the super niece.

On whether Tokyo disappointment prepared her for Paris: "I think each race I have done has mentally prepared me. From Tokyo, people were talking about the redemption story, I wanted to embrace the crowd and be proud of myself and smash it. Now, I have something to show for it."

There could also be a first medal for Ireland at the Games when the in-form Mona McSharry races in the 100m breaststroke final this evening (20:25).

Speaking of medals, Kellie Harrington gets the defence of her boxing gold from Tokyo under way this afternoon as she takes on Alessia Mesiano of Italy in the women's 60kg (14:46).

It's been a disappointing start in the ring for the Irish boxers, who have only had one out of four progress from the opening round.

  19. River Seine pollution stops triathlon swim trainingpublished at 07:55 British Summer Time 29 July

Pollution in the River Seine continues to impact the open water swimming events, with Monday's swimming training for Olympic triathletes cancelled.

This is the second successive day training has been cancelled after Sunday's 'familiarisation' session was called off for the same reason.

A statement issued on Monday by Paris 2024 and World Triathlon said that tests had shown the water quality was still below an acceptable standard and the organisations wanted to "reiterate that the priority is the health of the athletes".

The men’s triathlon is due to start on Tuesday and, should the water quality not reach the required standard on race day, the triathlon events have two contingency days - 1 and 2 August - built into the programme.

If the water quality is not deemed suitable on those days, the swimming leg of the triathlon will be dropped and it will become a duathlon, with athletes competing over just the bike and running legs.

Vanessa Gilles #14 of Team Canada celebratesImage source, Getty Images

There was late drama in Group A of the women's football last night.

Canada have somehow kept their chances of qualification alive with a 102nd-minute winner from Vanessa Gilles.

That comes after Canada were deducted six points after their involvement in a drone scandal that saw coach Bev Priestman handed a one-year football suspension from Fifa.

Priestman said yesterday that she is "absolutely heartbroken for the players" and urged the Canadian public to continue to support the team.

They'll have to beat group leaders Colombia in their final group match on Wednesday if they are to have any hope of reaching the quarter-finals.
