Josh Kerr speaking to BBC Sport after winning his heat earlier: "Pretty simple. I wanted to stay relaxed at the first half. I took a deep breath and went 'well I've got a bit of work to do here'. I feel great.

"I could hear my coaching staff and my parents at the back of my head saying 'you're too far back'. I had a great time and it was a good first run for us.

"These guys are great, but I think I'm one of the best closers in the world so I wasn't too worried about it. Smooth and easy. There's not a touch of nerve in me, I'm built for moments like this."

Some of the major headlines so far today in Paris:

    • Three years ago, Emily Craig and Imogen Grant missed out on a medal by 0.01 seconds in Tokyo. Today in Paris, they are Olympic champions after a dominant performance in the women's lightweight double sculls.
    • But it was so near but yet so far for Ollie Wynne-Griffiths and Tom George in the men's pairs, as they took a significant early lead only to be caught near the line by Croatian brothers Martin and Valent Sinkovic and had to settle for silver.
    • There was bronze in the diving for British pair Anthony Harding and Jack Laugher in the men's synchro 3m springboard - the fourth successive medal won in the diving pool by Team GB out of four finals so far at Paris 2024.
    • One of Britain's prime athletics medal hopes, Josh Kerr, cruised into the semi-finals of the 1500m in 3:35.83 - his best time of the season so far. GB's Neil Gourley is also through after coming fifth in his first race, behind defending champion Jakob Ingebrigtsen of Norway. George Mills missed out in his heat, but could still progress through the newly-introduced repechage.
    • Dina Asher-Smith, Daryll Neita and Imani Lansquiot all qualified from their women's 100m heats.
    • There was a major blow for GB in the women's high jump, as Morgan Lake failed to qualify for the final after missing three jumps at 1.92m.
    • Adam Peaty did not take part in the mixed 4x100m medley relay heats on Friday morning, after testing positive for Covid-19. Peaty could still come in for the final on Saturday evening after Team GB successfully qualified.

And some events to look out for today:

    • After yesterday's medal race was abandoned because of a sudden change in the wind direction, they will try again in the men's skiff at 12:13 with British sailors James Peters and Fynn Skerritt getting another chance to force their way into the medal positions.
    • It's over to Chateau de Versailles at 13:00 for the equestrian as Britain's Ben Maher, Harry Charles and Scott Brash compete in the team jumping final.
    • Britain are on course for a medal in the women's windsurfing, where Emma Wilson currently leads. The final stages of that competition take place from 14.30 BST today.

The heartbreak of missing out on a medal in Tokyo is well and truly in the past now.

There's going to be quite a few more tears of joy this afternoon.

Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce might be 37 but she is still a sprinter to be feared in the 100m and the two-time Olympic 100m champion is safely through to the semi-finals.

The Jamaican finished second in 10.92 with Ivory Coast's Marie-Josee Ta Lou storming to victory in 10.87 - the best time in any of the heats.

No trouble for Asher-Smithpublished at 11:47 British Summer Time 2 August

    Women's 100m - round one

    Harry Poole
    BBC Sport in Paris

Dina Asher-Smith has made significant changes to get herself back in contention for major medals following disappointing World Championship performances in Budapest.

The 2019 200m world champion split with childhood coach John Blackie in October, ending their 19-year partnership, to join Edrick Floreal's group in Austin, Texas where she trains alongside medal rival Julien Alfred.

There have been promising signs since, including a first major title in five years when she won European gold in Rome in June.

The Briton and Poland's Ewa Swoboda, who she will expect to face in the final, are a class above the rest in heat five and comfortably qualify, Asher-Smith offering her rival a congratulatory pat on the back as she sneaks the win. That's all three Brits safely through to the women's 100m semis tomorrow!

Bryony Page looks pleased with that! She's got safely through all 10 of her moves and posts the second highest score of the morning so far - 54.970. She has a biggest score in her but she's probably saving that for the final, which this score should be enough to send her into.

Izzy Songhurst gets 52.920, so a great start by the two Britons here.

O'Donovan and McCarthy win gold for Irelandpublished at 11:41 British Summer Time 2 August

    Men's lightweight double sculls

    Andy Gray
    BBC Sport NI in Paris

Paul O'Donovan and Fintan McCarthy have just cemented their status as two of the greatest Olympians in Irish history.

The Irish support travelled in their numbers and O'Donovan and McCarthy backed it up in some style.

That's their second Olympic gold after also winning in Tokyo, and they have also won three world titles as a crew.

After winning silver alongside his brother Gary in 2016, O'Donovan also becomes the first Irish athlete to win medals as three consecutive Olympics.

    What an achievement.
